I don't know if this would interest you at all, but we did a Segway tour that was very fun - went by the River, the Alamo, the King William district, etc. It would be something different if they're into that sort of thing.

Yes Gehrig is very helpful & always has good info. Almost everything in the downtown area is walkable but there is also a streetcar/trolley www.viainfo.net/Busservice/streetcar.aspx The Drury Inn & Suites is a great value for your money with lots of Free amenities & near all the attractions + closer to the quiet side of the RW. www.druryhotels.com/properties/alamo.cfm

There is currently no public transportation within Arlington (where the stadium is located) or from Dallas and the only option from FW is set up for Cowboy games. However, as you research hotels, I would ask the hotel if they have access to a shuttle for the Cotton Bowl. In Dallas, you can check out the downtown hotels since they would be close for the parade but I suspect many are booked. Also look in Uptown and Market Center. You posted on...

alternative to renting a car at SAT
Published (2009-11-29 11:28:00)
Hertz has a location near Harry Wurzbach which is a road not far from the airport, I have rented from that location before. They have pick up and drop off, but not to or from the airport as that would compete with their Airport location. Enterprise also has cheap rates away form the airport. You will probably have to take a taxi or shuttle somewhere and then get the car.

How bad will traffic be?

Thanks poodleone! She originally was supposed to deliver a guest to a residence in Preston Hollow (I think that's where) but luckily (since my OP) has arranged a meeting in Hillsboro with someone who will take the passenger the rest of the way. Thank goodness! :) From Waco, I'd definitely take 281 to San Antonio on heavy traffic days. I just wasn't sure if 281 would be a better bet; maybe traffic is just as bad on the backroads...

Travel in January

Thanks to everyone who responded. We're thinking we may stay in SA for a couple of weeks if we are able to find condo/apartment type accommodation. So far we haven't been able to find this. Any suggestions?

Carriage ride is a good idea, it's not far off their normal routes and could be arranged to pick them up at their B&B. I suggest one way maybe to dinner. You can also arrange to have a dinner on one of the barges, that's quite different. Other treats might be tickets to a Spurs game, if they enjoy that. There are wine tours in the Fredricksberg area - a chauffeured or group one could be...

The Alamo is two blocks from the river and the Riverwalk is downtown. El Mercado is walking distance. They are all located in the tourist area downtown so Riverwalk is prime location whether the river is running or not. You may feel a bit taken by paying riverwalk prices with an empty river but all the restaurants and other river actvities (other than the riverboats) will be going full ...

I am the wrong person the respond as I have gone only twice and did not much care either time. Both times were from Freeport . Actually the 2nd time was not all bad as it was like a 100 person boat compared to a 10 person the first time around (plus I am not a real big fisherman - simpler to buy it!).
Getting to the point - several charters - it will all depend on how many ...

I'll vote for SA in January. Lots to do, less likely to catch the blue norther as you might in FW and Dallas. Beautiful city with lots of options.

One "quirky" thing to do is to visit a few of the painted churches in that area. You will find one in Shiner. My favorite is the church at Praha.

And map:

You might want to visit or stay a night in Gonzales. Others will have their favorites.

Bad. I travel the opposite direction (Austin to Dallas) and traffic seems to be terrible on 35 all day going in both directions. If possible, tell your friend to leave from Dallas as early as possible. I've heard that 6am is a good time to get on the road to avoid the heavy traffic, but that may not be possible since he/she has to drive from Waco to Dallas first. If not early, then ...

I've had the pie and met Bud, the Pie Man, but haven't eaten at the cafe. I would say that the pie alone is worth the drive. The chocolate chip cookie pie with ice cream is wonderful!

Your only option is the bus. The Greyhound station is downtown San Antonio . You can get a taxi from the airport in Austin to the station there. Only a little over an hour ride. Might find a few unsavory characters on the bus but it is your only option as the train does not arrive in SA until late in the evening. There are about 14 departures daily and it should cost under $20.00.
