We spent 15 days in Peru , including the Inca Trail & time acclimatizing to the altitude in the Sacred Valley & Cusco prior to the trek, 2 days in AC after the trek, & a couple of days at Lake Titicaca. We felt like we didn't have nearly enough time to see all we wanted! Arequipa can be reached by air, and Colca Canyon from there.

You have to be on the LAN PERU (Spanish) website! If you get to the credit card list where you need to find ESTADOS UNIDOS then you have already viewed the fares available...maybe you are picking the wrong one or maybe there are not BASE PLUS fares available for that day! $20 extra bucks on your ticket doesnt sound like too much to avoid the hassell you seem to be finding yourself in does it?

My Peru trip in late November 2009
Published (2009-12-30 08:08:00)
Sorry Sidneygirl, I do not know how to send parcels back home from Peru , it's a great idea. Maybe one of the Peru experts will reply. I do know I bought many nice and cheep postcards, but they cost $2 each to mail! Had to ask my guide to mail them from Cusco , Sacred valley hotel could not help me. The guide told me that the post office refused my used dollar bills and only took my new looking ones, so beware. Edited: 8:09 am, December...

Will be in SAmerica for two weeks. Arrive into Lima Saturday AM, travel to Cuzco for 4d3n Inca Trail. I was planning on going to Aerquipa & Nazca, but have found out that it's feasible mainly by bus. Since I have one week (after Inca trail), I don't want to waste travel time on a bus...what is my best option (Rio de, Buenos Aires ?). help please

Flights, again

Have you tried the LAN Peru version website, Base Plus fare is $261 per person roundtrip including taxes. Or just use Taca and come back a day early, spend the night in LIma , which is what I would do anyways.

Sites like ORBITZ, TRAVELOCITY, and EXPEDIA only post fares flights made available to them by the airlines and unfortunately LAN doesnt advertise its lower fares on the North American sites!
You can still book "BASE PLUS" fares on the LAN Peru (Spanish) website which are going to cheaper than anything posted LAN fares on North American sites. Just change the country of origin...

Nazca back to Lima is about 6.5 hours by bus!
Thats only 2.5 hours!!!!!
Add in time to get from the bus station to the airport...you have to check in early at the airport so add that time in...and then its an hour and a half flight...then add time at the airport in Arequipa to get bags and whatnot...and ...

Its two completely different scenarios.
Lake T is the highest navigable lake in the world. you can visit its different reed islands. You can fly, train or bus from Cusco .
Islas Ballestas is in the coast and you need to get first to Paracas which is 250 kms south of Lima and then take a two hour boat trip to see lots of marine wildlife.
Its your pick, ...

I don't know how you can acclimatize without changing your airline tickets -- where are you before Cusco ?
The ideal is to start out at a moderate altitude like the Sacred Valley (including Machu Picchu) or Arequipa, then go higher -- like Cusco, before the highest -- Lake Titicaca (Puno). La Paz and Uyuni are only slightly lower than Puno.
Unless you can do this, ...

I just bought tickets this way the other day. You cannot purchase the Base fares, but the next row over on the screen - Base Plus - is what I was told is allowable. Yes, these are about twice the Base fare, but much cheaper than purchasing on the USA Lan site.

look for ESTADOS UNIDOS spanish for United States
be sure to book the base plus fare or you will have to
pay $178.50 per person extra non Peru resident fee
www.traficoperu.com can book this at or below what you can
if you continue to have difficulty also might check Peruvian Airlines
