2, 1/2 months rental for Manhattan?
Published (2009-11-08 09:15:00)
Are you willing to share a place with someone else? I'd contact citylightsnewyork.com and see what they can offer. You can also contact staythenight.com which is a b & b on upper Madison Ave. and see if they'd do a longer term rental.

CockleCove points out something very important that I had failed to consider and that is the time of year of your visit... It can be mighty cold down on 11th avenue in late December but who knows. Here we are in November and it is going to be in the 60's all next week... I would pay heed to what CockleCove and NYWhiz say regarding hotels now that you have given the dates of stay and approximate budget. In consideration of this I would...

Where to buy good winter clothing?

Check out the L.L. Bean website - they have winter clothing and the best footwear for snow. I use their gumshoes for daily wear here when it snows. They have a variety of sweaters etc....and I'm sure they can be shipped to Montreal - www.llbean.com I've been a customer since the 1950's Poppa

At 7AM a good number of the office workers will already be at their desks. It's nowhere near early. Regardless, Times Square is packed with people at - literally - ALL hours. You would be perfectly safe walking around Times Square at 3, 4, or 5AM. You wouldn't be at all lonely for company.

Another popular place for discounted designer goods is Loehmann's: http://nymag.com/listings/stores/loehmanns01/ It's an easy walk from the Filene's Basement in Union Square that sky0000547 mentioned. (And by the way, if/when you go to that Filene's Basement, go to the top floor and make your way to the windows at the front--there's a good view over Union Square.) You know about the Christmas markets around town,...

Ganesh Temple Canteen
Published (2009-11-08 07:00:00)
Even Brooklyn Mel occasionally leaves Brooklyn. Last night we ventured to the Ganesh Temple in Flushing, Queens. Heres my trip report. The Temple Canteen is entered through a door to the right of the temple. You then go down a few flights of stairs to a basement. There is a counter at the front and folding tables and chairs in the rest. At Saturday night it was crowded, but the wait at the counter was not long, the food came our rapidly, and...

Carteret to Times Square
Published (2009-11-08 21:18:00)
You're welcome :-) Forgot to give you the link to the NJ Transit page where you can get the schedule and fares. Pick Linden as your origin station, New York Penn Station as your destination (there is a Penn Station in Newark, NJ -- don't get off there!); the search function will first retrieve the schedule info, but there's another tab above that with fare prices. FYI, children under 5 ride free, ages 5-11 are 1/2 price. Buy...

I have tried to buy something there twice, but, yuck. Can't bring myself to do it. It's just too gross, and I suppose I'm not that young, drunk or desperate anymore. (Please don't cut-n-paste that, thank you.) There's a counter with a couple of stools, but really no place to sit properly. It's about as fun as a gas station snack mart, IMHO.

perhaps we should ask you why you focused on this one... I am a big fan of Sondheim but except for the memorable "Send in the Clowns" this Sondheim work moves pretty slowly and i think the vibrancy of something like "In the Heights" would more suit the average theater goer especially at 14. But maybe your daughter is getting ready to play this in her school... Lots of schools do this ...

Sometimes I don't, sometimes I respond to try to get the discussion back on track, and sometimes I start to respond, get distracted, and finally post it 15 min later, after others have already responded.

There are several things on your list that are relatively close to one another, so if you don't stay too long at any of them, you can fit most of it in. Radio City, Rockefeller Center, Magnolia and St. Patrick's are very close to each other, and M&M World, Times Square, TKTS and Junior's (45th St. location) are close together, and not far from Rockefeller Center.
Personally, ...

Hi Sharon. There are a few previous posts on this subject if you put the words premium economy in the text search box just above. Here's one with some good info. I think no one else can really tell you at what price the extra comfort makes sense.
