Montreal's a great city, but I would be scared stiff to join neslaw1 in his 3 hour trip there. It takes me over 5 hours to drive there.

Long Wharf is downtown. I can't tell you how to get there (uh, because you don't have a starting point) but there's a T stop right there (Aquarium stop on the Blue Line) and suffice it to say, it's on the beaten path.

If you are coming straight 95, in Peabody it merges w/ the "128 loop" that Alan mentioned. It is usually quite slow from the time 95 joins 128 until you get past the point where 93 merges in. I think Alan's estimate of an extra 30-45 minutes over what trip advisor says is a good one. Also, I took the Totten Pond Road exit in Sept and there was a lot of construction. I found it EXTEMELY confusing. I don't know if...

Wow - there are lots & lots of choices! The more specifics you give the better - for instance age of kids, interests, etc That said - The #1 piece of advice is to go with a reputable realtor. There are "Top Questions" here on the Cape Cod page that will give you a sense of the differences in many of the towns on the Cape & one on "how do I rent the perfect home on the Cape" you should take a...

We're not being 100% clear. The original store is gone, at least for the next 2 or more years. But F.B. had already been expanded to a chain up & down the East Coast. Those (non-original) locations are still open, including Boylston St in Back Bay.

Also there's the post office square garage that's safe, clean and convenient. NOT to the Westin though, it's a walk past South Station to get to it. You could either hop in a taxi or if the Westin has a shuttle may be they'd drop you off at South Station for this garage. Here's info for it: www.posquare.com The other parking lot that's cheap is at Fan Pier near the Moakley Federal Courthouse, the Daily Catch...

Restaurant dress codes
Published (2009-12-12 18:48:00)
Matt, I understand how you feel, and I don't place a lot of importance on attire myself. But the clear conclusion is, if that's the way you feel, then you shouldn't go or even want to go to restaurants that ask for a certain standard of dress. Why complain about those places, when there are so many others available to you that are more in line with your convictions as to what is appropriate?

A party of 14 at a non-chain restaurant can be a bit of a problem. There are a lot of good but small restaurants around BU/Back Bay/surrounding areas. One place that could certainly handle 14 is Brasserie Jo on Huntington Ave., not too far from BU and rather large. You didn't specify price. Except for a couple of steak dishes, most main courses at Jo are in the high teens to low ...

I stayed at the Marriott Renaissance late last summer and parked at the Park Lane Seaport lot. It's cheaper than the hotels valet and lots. I only parked there for one night though, you have a couple of nights. It's $30 for 24 hours at this one. It's very safe, extremely clean, in fact it's fairly new and it's very convenient to your hotel, it would only be a walk over the footbridge ...

The 5th floor at South Station has a bag check area. They're open during the day, just walk thru the connection walkway in the bus station behind the railroad station area to get up to the 5th flr from the lobby level. You could also give them a call to make sure they're open when you arrive 617 526-1800.
YES it's a good idea IF it can be arranged! You could either take the ...

"there are places in Somerville and Cambridge that I would definitely not recommend "
Not to highjack the thread, and with all due respect, but some of us haven't had the luxury of living a lifetime in high end suburbs and fancy summer destinations, and have managed to function quite well, happily, and very safely in these areas, without the slightest problem, over a long lifetime,...

If you plan on staying Downtown, DON'T RENT A CAR. You won't want or need it. Boston's a great walking city and has the "T" to get you around otherwise. From the Airport, you can take the T for $2 or a taxi for $30-40 anywhere Downtown. Let us know what specifically you like to do and your budget and we'll help with some hotel recommendations.

Williamstown is beautiful but f-f-f-f-reezing at this time of year. It has charming inns, great restaurants and the fabulous Clark Art Museum (Turners, Renoirs, Degas...)
Obviously, there are many other places in the Berkshires that would fit the bill. The Norman Rockwell Museum is in Stockbridge. Also, in NH there is the Jackson area filled with adorable inns and family ...

You really didn't give us much to go on. Aside from doing some research on your own (the Things to Do tab on the left would be a good place to start), you need to give some more information like what you are interested in, how much you want to spend on things (in dollar amounts) and what sort of restaurants/bars you are looking for.

You should be okay until you hit the piece that used to be designated Route 128, which is the inner circle route around Boston . From there, I would add an extra 30-45 minutes beyond normal driving to allow for traffic. I would think more towards the former, but traffic can be very "iffy".

You will absolutely need a reservation. You also need to know that many restaurants forgo their regular menu in favor of a prix fixe for New Years Eve. I haven't seen many specific menus yet, but a general price range (say, for three courses, before tax & tip, without wine) would be helpful.

My suggestion is take a taxi. Cost will be around $30. Car service would be more. You could take the T for only $2, of course, but you'll have luggage, be in a strange city, and Beacon Hill doesn't have a subway stop, so you'd have to walk part of the way, at least.
