During the 2 or 3 weeks that we use our various cards, the rates go up and down like the proverbial fiddler. We notice that the cards which add on an transaction charge give a slightly higher rate than those who don't. They get you all ways when you exchange currencies.

dundee01, I don't know what your bank would charge you for using an ATM here because my accounts are local - that's something you need to check with them as many UK banks charge a "transaction fee". I know when I occasionally withdraw from my UK account here using an ATM I'm charged £1.99, or £1.25 for a debit card transaction.

Malaria Tablets information

Hi Dundee, 3 and 4 have not been used in southern Africa for many years, as they are completely ineffective EXCEPT in one area of Malawi , where they have become completely effective again, much to the surprise and great interest of the scientists. Ivan

You are right about the convenience, I use ATMs just as I would do at home but I usually have a bit of sterling tucked away just in case the ATMs are down, It does happen, power cuts sometimes cut their communications links, but its rare for it to affect the ATMs at Barclays Bamburi and the several ATMs at Nakumatt, Nyakli at the same time. If you do change sterling, another vote for Shaban as the best rates on the North Coast

No photos required when purchasing Visa on arrival. Yes, complete the application (download from High Commission site) beforehand and on arrival at Immigration go right up to the counter (to Purchase Visa) with cash and passport. On the plane you're provided a Landing Card to complete, then with Visa application and passport, get your visa.

Things to do in Kisumu
Published (2009-11-26 04:41:00)
Hi Doeshen Kisumu being on Lake Victoria has some great water related excursions. You can hire a boat, and go birding and/or fishing. Also you can go water skiing from Rusinga Island. You could go to Kogelo, from where Obama hails from. Also ask the locals (whose wedding you are going for) what you could do. Good luck and enjoy.

Dear Sylvs Another good idea is what we do, is to buy a kenyan sim card and put it in your mobile and buy a scratch card which costs about 500ks for the dearest and use that for 'phone calls home. The cost from the hotel is extortionate and from your mobile and the money soon runs out!! As you are going at New Year, it should quiten down after the 3rd and 4th of January. If going safari, Ferdinand of beach air tours and safaris - a very...

Hi,
We did things the other way round, tsavo east/west our first time and samburu/mara the second time. The first trip whet our appetite for safaris and kenya and the second trip was well words can't describe it.
However if we had done it the other way round we perhaps may have been a little disappointed, still would have enjoyed it but the mara is the ultimate ...

The best thing to do is take your ATM card and withdraw KES once you are here. Today's rates at my bank here were: GBP 121.1, USD 72.9 and EUR 109.65. Given the median rates those aren't bad. I don't know what rate you'd get in the UK as I don't live there but I'm sure someone else will be able to answer that question.
In addition to your ATM card it's a good idea to bring ...

2-2:45 Karen Blixen Museum
3-3:30 Kazuri Beads
4-4:30 Matt bronze
5-6 Elephants

I am a novice as regards cameras and like the uncomplicated " point and shoot".When I first bought a digital camera I had a whale of a time clicking and took 100s of photos and to be honest most of them came out perfectly (which did surprise me ) I wouldn`t go without it now. Good enough for me . The experts on TA will be best to advise you

Are you wanting a safari in Kenya and then a beach holiday in SA? Why not have the two in one country?

Hi, things are much improved.Ideally get a visa in your home country. The queue in the airport takes about 20 mins and the luggage again abt 10 mins.Have the right amount of dollars or pounds also. There are many licensed taxis outside ,alternatively you can ask your hotel to organise this.If not, expect to pay abt 1500 kshs/ £12 for a journey to the city ,a drive of abt 20-30 mins at that...

There is a range of options at Voyager. Voyager has a theme of being a ship which stops at different ports each day and the choice of food reflects this.
1. The main restaurant where you help yourself to soups, salads, hot and cold food, and vegetarian.. Chefs are on hand to cook specials and carve meats.
2. The Minestrone Restaurant which is waiter service and food ...

Not sure about the odds but I brought my 'elderly' - she will hate to be called that - mother out to Kenya for the first time 2 years ago at the age of 78 and she had a yellow fever jab before coming out with no problems, we went on to Rwanda so it was an essential jab.

If money is no object then I would visit Masai Mara, unfortunately we have to budget for a familly of 4, so its still on our to do list. Having said that we have been to tsavo east and west several times and have had a great time on both occasions. If you want to see some of my pics try here....

Hi, if you try to keep rehydrated with gin, you will end up pickled!! If you MUST stick to gin then stick to G and T with lots (and lots) of T, or Tusker,
price? cant help on that one, some of the regular soaks (only kidding) on here will come back with that one, but I bet its cheap (by our standards)
