I live in Colorado and know Vail. If you are not a skier then you would probably not enjoy Vail as much as Jackson. Vail was built entirely as a ski town, it has little beyond that IMO. Jackson has a lot to offer, the elk refuge being one thing. You can also go ice skating on one of three free outdoor rinks or take a dog sled tour or take a snowcoach tour into Yellowstone. So much to do.

I agree get rid of cotton underlayers. REI, Lands End etc have great options for long underwear, but I have found good deals at Kohls. January in YS, you will need a jacket rated to keep you warm at 0 degrees, insulated pants, mittens (warmer than gloves) hat, Sorel type boots. A totally different place!

Also, the White Bufffalo Club is in a good location in downtown Jackson. You could easily walk to the town square and all the restaurants and bars in that area.

I am not sure but keep checking for cancellations as well, we picked up a room doing that.
