oh I forgot, the B&B having been there, the Bamboo Suite, the best room, is the one I would recommend. I wouldn't stay in the downstairs suite or the one behind the hosts' house that shares the deck. The Bamboo is cute and has a great view. Makai Hale has an incredible view and hot tub under the stars and tons of privacy. I would be careful going too cheap. For some $25 a night you can choose the difference between a really...

Take a look at Google maps satellite view and you will see the whole coast and why "town" may lead to mis-expectations for Puako. It is a beloved location but the "center" is the general store. Eateries are in the resort shopping centers and in Kawaihae. Once you see the lava, you will see why.

Sounds like the perfect honeymoon to me! After a wedding I think just relaxing and enjoying where you are and who you are with is what is needed. Glad you splurged for a spa day! When you come back for an anniversary you can over plan :) thanks for sharing!

Christmas week weather - east side
Published (2009-12-20 03:26:00)
Yeah, today was not a day for sightseeing! Rain off and on all day, at times extremely heavy. About 8 inches of rain last 24 hours. Massive thunderstorms & lightning all day (had to hold our two little maltese dogs pretty much all day...), and numerous power outages. Most for just a few seconds, but some that lasted 10-30 minutes. Nothing too major but major enough to keep the computers in the off position....

An important point that TT did not cover is thet there are 4 KTA's Waimea Waikoloa Village Kona ( on Palani) Keauhou off Alii Drive. Now each has its own bakery... each with a different style The Keauhou and the Waikoloa KTA seem to offer the best stuff. Dont expect to find the same things at ALL KTA markets.... you wont The KTA ,TT is refering to is 6 miles south of "metropolitan Kona" in the Keauhou Shopping Center. (...

Very sad story....but THAT was our first impression of this little town on our recent trip to BI. Yup, wild wild west describes this quaint little town exactly! Only thing missing were the horses! Blue book did say this is place for FBI fugitives, etc.... We were looking for something to eat, but decided to only stop for coffee at 7/11. Hope no one else was hurt!

Well we arrived on the Big island late late last evening ...into KOA as the East Coast (Hilo side)was putting on a light show with all the lightning and storms. The drive up to Waikoloa Beach Resort at around Midnite was warm, clear skies...very pleasant. This morning , after breakfast, we ventured up to Waikoloa Village market and on the way back were hit head on with a ferocious Hailstorm!!!. have not seen that on this side of the Island,...

Yes, the Makai Hale is booked for our dates and the Hale Ho'onanea only has the room with the shared lanai. I have read good things about them and so we might just book there as the location is right. Do you know is the surroundings are pretty? It's five minutes from some great beaches. Does anyone know anything about Puako B & B? Thanks!

Day 7- Drive/Relax.
By this point I had a revelation.... everyone here was right. I planned ALL this stuff and what i wanted to do more then anything was RELAX. Although I was a bit scared I would regret not seeing everything, we made the decision to cancel ALL plans for the last 3 days and just be spontaneous and totally lazy. It was our honeymoon for goodness sake! haha. We...

We grew up in Buffalo, and when we were kids all that white stuff was fun to play in. But when I grew up and started having to shovel it out of my driveway it was time to go! That's why we've lived in So. California for 30 years - and of course make our annual trek to Maui :-)

You will not find anything cheap on the Gold Coast , so you either stay in Kona or a B&B in Hawi and go to Puako from there. However, I wouldn't consider staying in Hawi as a base for a one week vacation.

We landed at jacks house with paradise helicopters and spent a good 45 minutes with Jack, I do not know that he still does the bed and breakfast thing but he does have helicopters come in pretty much daily. He said he has to walk atleast 4 miles to town to get groceries. It was a true experience seeing just how close the last flow came to his house. He has know desire to leave his house and ...

If you could post the hyperlink to its listing so that we don't have to search for it, that would be helpful. Hale Aloha is a very common type name and I don't remember anyone talking about it before, but that's common with house rentals.
As for the month, it depends on why you're coming. If you want the calmest water conditions, May, no question. We have winter here too. ...

While that place in Kealakekua looks like it would be lovely and atmospheric, you won't like being there if you want to be on a sandy beach. It's all rocky at Napo'opo'o. The Place of Refuge beach is all right. There is Ho'okena which is OK.
Snorkeling you would be near Two Step. Sometimes a hard exit.
The traffic between there and Kona is heavy and slow, one of the ...

It really all depends on what time and day, some days you get 2 or 3 flights leaving at the same time and security can back up.. Normally I leave 90 minutes. It can take 5 minutes or 20 minutes at the car rental. It can take 15 minutes to 60 minutes getting to the gate. Last holiday season I took my son to catch an evening flight and it took him 45 minutes on line for TSA.. another 15 ...

Lots to see (two weeks would be better). Yes you can drive to Volcano and back in a long, long day (start out very early) but best to put a few days on the east side cause there's lots to see looping your way around the island.

I believe somebody recently posted it here that the limit to rent one hotel room is for three people, so you will need two rooms. You might as well go with a condo.
