Rest in Peace Liam Clancy
Published (2009-12-04 15:19:00)
This is very sad news indeed. I posted details a few months ago of a documentary film called "The Yellow Bittern" about Liam Clancy which had limited cinema release in Ireland . Since then it has been shown on Irish television and has turned out to be a wonderful eulogy to the man Bob Dylan described as the best ballad singer he ever heard. If you get a chance to view it, I'd take it and listen to the story of this...

Bus Eireann Changes - Check...

It would appear, according to the article below from the Irish Independent, that there will be reductions on Bus Eireann services from early 2010. While some of them may not be particularly relevant to Trip Advisor members (i.e. city services in places such as Limerick), its quite possible that others not mentioned in the article may be. So do check timetables before you travel. independent.ie/business/irish/bus-eireann-to…

engagement ring

You also have to consider if you will be saving much or getting value when you take into account flights and accommodaition costs etc... of travelling to Antwerp. Also if anything goes wrong with the ring e.g. a stone becomes loose or falls out how do you go about sending it to be repaired. Edited: 9:49 am, today

Rest in Peace Liam Clancy

I heard this on the 6/1 news this evening. Really sad. He was a truly great singer and irishman. I only saw "The Yellow Bittern" a few weeks ago and would agree that it's a great film on his life! I love his rendition of "Waltzing Matilda" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFCekeoSTwg Edited: 3:40 pm, yesterday

Hi All. thanks again for the tips! Yes, I think 8 hours on a bus would leave us...a bit stiff, if nothing else. The airplane trip this time is only 17 hours from start to finish (which is better than the last one, that had us on the road for 26 hours and we were blasted when we landed), so the last thing we'll want to do is spend another entire day seated in a confined space. I'm going to be hobbling like I'm 90 for a day or...

Galway on Xmas day
Published (2009-12-02 07:59:00)
a good walk on Christmas day is what most people would do - that and going to some sort of a mass or religious meeting. Yes, make sure that you have booked at your hotel for christmas day lunch, or purchase some lunch items yourself. There will be some corner shops (mostly foreign owned) and some garages open during Christmas day - garages are basically convenience stores as well as places to get petrol for your car. The day after Christmas...

From Baltimore, you can easily make a day trip to Cork City, it's probably close to 2 hours each way if you're not used to the roads. Not sure which other larger cities you would be trying to visit from Baltimore ? Have you spent any time with a route planner like the one here: viamichelin.co.uk/viamichelin/…Ireland-map

Irish Rail advance booking
Published (2009-12-03 13:50:00)
Glad that you've got your contingency plans in place :-) Feel very sorry for some of the people of Carrick at the moment - even before the storms the waters were very high (way over the lovely new board-walks and already lapping into the Marina car-park opposite the Landmark Hotel) and then afterwards a lots of those new-build townhouses on the western side of the Shannon were completely trashed with no electricity or anything. The...

Your choice of location may depend on whether you decide to hire a car or not, as many small seaside villages are unlikely to have good train or bus links to Dublin . Depending on how you are travelling, you might consider the following;
Stay near Dublin in a seaside village such as Skerrries or Malahide. These have the advantage of being near the airport and have easy rail & bus ...

I don't think that you will get clearcut advice on your query. Weatherwise, the difference between summer and winter here is getting blurred to some extent in that summers appear to be getting wetter and cooler (if the last few are anything to go by). Winters were never that cold with snow only an occasional feature - and that is still the case.
The obvious advantage in May-...

Well, yes, reducing bus services is a great response to recession, pollution and the death of town centres. Sigh. Will the last one to leave please switch off the lights.

Zappers: I've taken a quick scout through your blog but will be revisiting soon.
looks like you managed to tap into the "Real Ireland". Some amazing photos especially in Connemara. "The Rag Tree" is great! Liked the ones of the mist on the Cliffs of Moher as well!
You managed to capture a well know character in the West of Ireland called "Michael Staunton". He is the "King" ...

You will be able to catch any train on your route on the date of your ticket, providing you aren't in possesion of a special offer type ticket which restricts you to trains at particular times (this will be stated in the terms and conditions of your ticket when you buy it).
If you have made a specific seat reservation for a particular train, this will not be transferred over...

The Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide series is almost exclusively for cities. There are a few that refer to a region of a country, but I don't think there are any that refer to an entire country.

You will find details for the Rock of Cashel including opening times here: heritageireland.ie/en/…
Since the guided tour will give you much more info than doing it yourself you may want to wait for it and also wander around on your own. I would budget 1 - 2 hours depending on if you get the tour right away.

Monroe's also has a little pizza place connected to it. You can simply place your order and when it's ready, you can take the pizza into Monroe's to eat it. I don't know if they have some type of a financial arrangement with the pizza place or not but the pizza is actually pretty good. I assume that the pizza place is still there but I'm relying on my experience from the summer of 2008....

Railtours have an excellent reputation. Paddywagon is more of a budget/backpacker option, reviews are mixed and criticisms often involve the quality of the tour as well as general timekeeping. The old adage 'you get what you pay for' is worth keeping in mind........
Throwing Derry in the mix in what is already a very crowded day is not necessarily a good thing. The Paddywagon...
