Don't trust it. Use it as back-up only. Read the links I gave you. Bring a proven card (or two) and cash. Cheers, Terry

Safety in Havana
Published (2009-12-30 13:03:00)
Of course there are periods of higher police presence. Just like we have a pre-xmas R.I.D.E. campaign here in Canada. One would think by seeing such a high police presence that no Canadian knows how to drive because of this. So sometimes the Havana police are out checking local Habaneros for ID etc., and sometimes............ …photobucket.com/albums/…cop2.jpg LOL!!! salud Steve Edited: 1:04 pm, December 30, 2009

Got to agree with Terry on this... ATM's are dodgy things. I have used a Visa Electron readily in the ATM in Mirimar Commercial Centre but it hasn't worked in Varadero ... similarly used a Natwest Visa debit (embossed) in Cienfeugos which didn't work but a DNB Nord Visa debit (embossed) worked in the same machine..... Take cash & use cards as a back up... PS - I recently got a prepaid Mastercard to book Ryanair flights...

good places to eat and go in Havana

In reply to reactions to my previous post: I am a (relatively) experianced traveller but have never experianced (not even in Egipt and Tunesia) such blunt robery as in Havana : - When I say bills were wrong I mean they were wrong: something is in the menu 1.5 cuc and you get charged 2.5 for it. Or person looks you in the eyes and hands you 4 cuc change of a 10 cuc bill while for 2 sandwiches priced 1 cuc (clearly!) - Not to mention that I...

Yes, I have met Jorge on a few occasions and can tell you he's a nice guy, but since I haven't really used his services my recommendation is more a sum up of all the good reviews he gets around here. Check the search box. Water? Don't know what time of year you are going, but even though I am no beach-freak it's warm enough year round for someone like me. I think average temperatures on the north coast are from something...

Havana Club 7 Year Old Rum
Published (2009-12-30 00:54:00)
When we were in Havana , I found out about 7 year old Havana Club and Pineapple juice. It is absolutly heavenly! There was a Professor there from the States on a license and he was the one that told me. So, I ordered it. It is usually called an Havana Special and for lack of a better term it was served in a small Champagne glass. I told him it wasn't a very big drink as his were always in a large glass. I ordered another time and it was...

Hi we are going here in july 2010, we were just wondering:
if it was busy?
was there a lot of bugs and mosquitoes ?
what was the food like on the buffets?
what was the weather like?
and overall cleanliness.
Thanks for the help and advise, please write back soon.

I am baffled, too. Perhaps you have the wrong idea about casas? I mean, some of them are REALLY like hotels in every possible way, except the service is always more personal and food is always better... You may run into your hosts or other guests in the hallway, but that's identical to what would happen in a hotel, and if you really don't wish for more contact than that, you won't have ...

Honestly, unless your Spanish is semi-passable and you're a very experienced budget traveller then Cuba is NOT the destination for you.
It's one of the cheapest destinations in the Caribbean , but it's VERY expensive compared to almost everywhere else in Mexico, Central and South America . If you really are American as your profile says you can't even fly there direct - you...

Calling Mexicana/Click from the US is 011-52-555-448-0990.
Option 3 will take you to an agent, ask for international, then ask for an English speaking international agent. Almost all international phone agents are Spanish-English bilingual, an international agent might transfer you to another international agent with better English as a courtesy sometimes. They are open by ...

Sorry Gordon, but yes, you're still posting crap. NONE of what you posted at #17 has ever happened to an American tourist. The OFAC is NOT actively pursuing American tourists illegal visiting Cuba and NONE of the dire warnings about prison terms and $250,000 fines that you keep referring to have ever happened. Not once, not ever.
Enough already with the ridiculous fear ...

One good opion is go to Jibacoa there are 2 resorts there. Breezes Jibacoa and Cameleon villa Jibacoa. They are half way between Havana and Varadero about 45mins. Very nice setting. Mountain behind the resorts great snorkeling right a the beach. Very quiet area.

Honestly, a decent hotel would work just fine, but a super baby friendly casa would I think be even better for one reason... Having Grandma/Mom/the lady across the hall/etc. available to look after your little one for a few hours every now and then would be a Godsend on your vacation.
Here's one contact suggestion:
