There will be taxis in Tongoy. Playa Blanca is only 15 minutes away.

It isn't likely that there is a bus. The road to Playa Blanca off the Guanaqueros to Tongoy road is about 5 kms long so you really need transport. I think the safest would be to email your accommodation (are you staying at the Playa Blanca complex or cabins?) and ask.

Fishing???
Published (2009-11-26 21:11:00)
What Toid says is true, but don't expect to find a good river spot near Santiago , and a clear spot on the beach, since, rivers near Santiago are not specially known for their fishing activities, and the coast will be flooded with tourists on summer vacations! For good fishing, you'd have to go south, to the lake disctrict or even farther.

thank you to all who responed. We DO know Santiago and the area to live. Don't know why individuals thought we did not. We are a well traveled couple. We wanted input in living there and we received some private e-mails and it really made us think twice. It is not out of the running though.

Areas outside Santiago
Published (2009-11-24 20:54:00)
We are arriving from Canada via Santiago . We plan to send 2 nights in Santiago and then go to Valapriaso for 2 nights and then wanted to go south for a couple more days or go back to Santiago and take day trips. We are looking for suggestions on towns and possible accomodations. We are hoping to take in some wine tasting and then chill out and enjoy the area.

ChileGringos may now be for the birds as they pick on it's corpse but I question the true Chile savvy or interests of anyone that praises Jon/John Steel/Steele as a moving to and living in Chile expert. YMMV.

For Punta Arenas: the town itself can be done on foot, but offers not too much. If you have more time you could rent a car and visit Fort Bulnes (about 1 hour drive) and Seno Otway Penguin Colony (depending when you are visiting), also an hour drive from Pt. Arenas.

Argentina uses 850 and 1900 MHz bands, Chile only 1900 and Uruguay 850, 1800 and 1900.
So as long as your phone uses 1900 MHz band then the answers is yes for all three.

I went to Easter Island last year.
Usually you buy these tours in the heartland (meaning Santiago ), but they work together with people on the island... so, usually when you get there, native rapa nui guides are waiting for you. If you're not lucky enough to get one these guides, you'll get someone, that almost for sure, has lived on the island, for a long time!!!
Frankly, I ...

The highway is good. More than half 4 lane. It is a long drive. A good place to break the trip is La Serena. It would be better to book flights within Chile from Chile. They are much cheaper.

Providencia, Vitacura and Las Condes are probably where you would want to live. You should visit the real estate ads on El Mercurio. This is the best source to see what is available, www.elmercurio.cl propiedades.

The metro is safe with or without luggage. You are unlikely to want to go to any neighbourhoods that would be unsafe.

Most visitors really enjoy Easter Island. Valparaiso is much more interesting than Mendoza, but it is not on your itinerary. I would think about that. It is going to be quite a trip, maybe you should thin it out a bit.

LAN runs a bus for its passengers to Viña del Mar, next door to Valparaiso from the Viña stop it is easy to get a cab to the cruise port. If you are not a LAN passenger then you can try to book the bus anyway, it appears as a flight on LAN's web page under other cities, Viña del Mar.
The there is a frequent bus service between Santiago and Valparaiso, but the trip can be ...

The cost depends on the level of service, but for such a long bus ride (23 hrs) I think you should get "cama" service or premium. An average mid-week schedule is here, with prices:

That is Turbus. As far as I know they are the only company which goes direct. There will be other lines leaving from Calama 1.5 hrs from San Pedro .
