Le Pommier is a very nice restaurant but contrary to what a lot of people have written on here, it is not a locals restaurant, it definitely caters to tourists. When you do see French people in there they are tourists themselves!!! Across the road, next to the cathedral is L'Assiette Normande, which is much more authentic. It is not such a "smart" looking restaurant but IMO the food is better and you will be able to try...

I agree with cpmac that you should rent your car in Paris and drive to Normandy . If you specify the Porte Maillot location as your pick-up point getting out of paris will be very easy. There are many places between Paris and Bayeux worth seeing including Château Gaiillard, Rouen and Jumièges. If you did not want to drive all the way back to paris from MtStM you could drop your car in Rennes and take the TGV from there.

As you have 5-6 days I'd say rent a car at Paris and visit places between Paris and Bayeux. You could also train out to Vernon to rent a car to avoid the hasle of driving and parking in Paris , and visit the sights. Vernon is next to Giverny, it's just outside Paris and is allready Normandy .

Something else to watch out for (that I was not aware of until after the fact) is the speed cameras that are set up in various areas. I was driving to Bayeux early one morning along the highway when a bright flash went off..... I can only assume my rental car company will be contacting me with the ticket amount whatever that will be. I notice that Google maps actually has little camera insignias when they give you directions, showing were...

If you have a day to spare a car will give you the flexibility to explore a bit more of Normandy . There is so much more to the area than just Bayeux and the beaches, worthwhile as those are. Between Paris and Bayeux you could visit Château Gaillard, Rouen and Jumièges, just for starters. Get your hands on the Michelin Green Guide to Normandy and you'll be astonished at how ...

The most important thing in Bayeux depicting the events leading to the Norman invasion of England - though perhaps prepared by William's PR nuns or stitch doctors. It is very well displayed and interpreted. In general it is a pleasant town, that many people use as a base for the D-day Invasion Beaches.
