No need to shout. There are lots of options in that area. Right in the lobby of the hotel is the Roaring Fork restaurant. The restaurant is a little pricey, but the bar is great and has wonderful food -- http://www.eddiev.com/ (click on Roaring Fork on the left side of the page). Within easy walking distance are two decent places for Mexican or Tex-Mex -- Iron Cactus is on 6th and Trinity - http://www.ironcactus.com/dt-austin.asp - and El Sol...

Hotel and Nightlife advice needed

Were trying to not spend more than 100, was planning on using priceline or something similar to try to get the best rate. As far as music, my pallate is diverse; Blues, Americana, R&R. Actually some guys from back home live and perform around Austin, Belleville Outfit, ever see them?

No, don't know anyone who has taken the tour. Folks I know usually stop at wineries as part of a big day out. For instance, visit Longhorn Caverns (marked on the Wine Trail map) with the two wineries nearby, plus perhaps a visit to Burnet and pie at the Bluebonnet Cafe. That's a much longer day, however, and more distance to cover. http://www.longhorncaverns.com/

Thank you for the wine map link. Do you know anyone who has taken the free tour? Just wondering if it's worth it or not. Thanks.

Wow, thank you. You guys know a lot about Austin! I am going to ask another question- any other hotel suggestions? I was kind of hoping to find something interesting, within walking distance to the Hyatt Regency as I said, and even better to not spend as much although it appears that even the Hyatt conference price of 170/night is a good one in this area. What might be second choice from San Jose (it appears booked already except for 260$...

They still may want to consider stopping by the Driskill. For $49 a person you get access to Chef Jonathon Gelman's small-bite stations, allow for champagne toasts and a great spot on the mezzanine for the balloon drop, and will foster dancing all night to the sounds provided by Groove Daddy.

Hello there! I am heading down to ATX for NYE and have convinced my parents and some of their friends to tag along. They have never been and I'd love to show them around one of my favorite cities. I am not actually spending New Year's Eve with them as I had made prior arrangements to attend a Reggae show and they feel it's not really their scene. They are looking for a live music type of place where they can dance, drink and be...

you might not like the price tag, but the Barton Creek buffet is absolutely delicious, one of the best in town. Our family has gone to Thanksgiving there for several years now, and like it better than the Four Seasons, the Hyatt and the Driskill. Worth the money.

Soco businesses and 2nd Street will make their opening decisions on an individual basis. If there's a particular shop you're interested in, give them a call. I would suspect some of the S. Congress shops will opt to open. Not to labor the point but $49 for the Driskill New Year's Eve party is a steal. It will be lovely, tasty food and Groove Daddy is good. Kim Polini sings with them and has an awesome voice. In addition the...

It is definitely walking distance and very safe. At that time of the year you may have a bit of rain though, so bring an umbrella.

My family's favorite for chicken fried steak is Threadgill's and we prefer the southern location on Barton Springs Road.
Our favorite Tex Mex is Chuy's and we like the original location on Barton Springs Road the best.
I'm sure you'll get lots of different answers on the restaurant questions!
Welcome to Austin!

Zilker at night for its Trail of Lights. During the day, Zilker's Japanese garden is nice all year round.
Here's a link to the Wine Trail map. We usually combine Driftwood and Mandola's -- numbers 5 and 12 -- with a trip to the Salt Lick. Two very different wineries, so they make for a good visit. Plus they are not that far away, unlike the wineries near Fredericksburg....

If you only have one night and want to see some live music, then you really should stay downtown. There are lots of options that will put you within walking distance to most of the live music venues. What's your budget for a hotel?
There should still be plenty going on on a Sunday, so no worries about that. What type of music are you interested in?

Go with late April. Most of the rain is in March and early April, but the temperatures should be wonderful and warm. If it does rain, it doesn't last for long.

The Texas State History Museum is closed, but the LBJ Library and Museum will be open (according to the website it only closes on Christmas Day), and even though the Capitol itself is closed, you could walk around the grounds, which are lovely. You could do that early in the day and then go down to SoCo. I'm pretty sure the restaurants down there will be open, so you could have a nice ...

I agree that it totally depends on the family. The most popular things are probably turkey, ham, or steaks.
