2010 Balloon Fiesta?
Published (2010-01-05 23:34:00)
Actually, there are two RV parking lots south of the launch field, one is right beside the Balloon Museum (for more dinero), and the major one, which I'm presuming you are referring to, is on the south side of Alameda Blvd. FYI: There are shuttle buses that run back and forth from the RV parking area to the balloon field, so you should have no problem getting in to see the fiesta "up close and personal," which is a must...

Uptown vs Old Town
Published (2010-01-03 12:36:00)
Thanks for all the good info on Old Town and the weather. Fifties sounds great right now, as it is about 9 degrees for a high today. Also, good info on where to buy local made items. I hate tourist traps, yet I really like to support local businesses like hand crafted items and local restaurants vs chains... Thanks!

Uptown vs Old Town

Old Town would definitely be the better choice - most of the museums are in that area and the shops galleries in Old Town focus more on the local items. There is a good variety of restaurants, mostly locally owned places. Most of the area can easily be covered on foot. Uptown is nice but a more modern area without any real historical interest, and the shops and restaurants tend to be more commercial places or chains, places that you would...

Also want to point out that what you will pay in Old Town for "local items" is going to be top tourist dollar. If you are interested in Native American crafts, you usually can save some $$ by purchasing from the artisans. For example, the Zuni pueblo has a small artisans co-op, Jemez pueblo has roadside stands where artisans sell, etc.

We plan to spend a week in New Mexico , flying into Albuquerque , the first part of April. We'd like to visit the Santa Fe and Taos area. Any other ideas? We like to hike and see the scenic areas.

Romantic Restaurant

We just ate at Lucia's in the Andaluz Hotel downtown. http://www.hotelandaluz.com/restaurant/ and liked it very much. The cooking was upscale, service very good, and the decor is "modern romantic" (light rather than dark?)

Uptown vs Old Town

We have found many local businesses in and around Old Town that have decent prices and we can trust that the items are genuine, not fake overseas copies! One of our favorite pottery shops, Agape SW Pottery is just off the plaza on Romero and near to it is a fun Mexican craft gallery, lots of interesting items. Across the street more fun and a great Zuni Fetish and bead shop, not sure of the name. We have found that prices in Old Town are less...

Early April should offer pleasant, cool temperatures, but mountain areas will still be cold at night. Santa Fe and Taos will be about 5 to 10 degrees colder than Albuquerque .
There is excellent hiking both on the west side and east side of Albuquerque's adjacent Sandia Mountains. Also, the South section of Petroglyph National Monument on our West Mesa near the remnants of...

Years ago the Sheraton was in Old Town, now that hotel is Hotel Albuquerque. http://www.hhandr.com/albuquerque.php
The Sheraton on Louisiana is in the Uptown area, near Coronado Mall. Nice area and close to Nob Hill, Univ of NM and close enough to get to old town.
A day trip to Santa Fe will be fine, possibly take the Railrunner Train.

I gotta follow up, as I was there Wednesday night also! Sorry I missed a chance to meet you, NMPJ. I saw several people with cameras on tripods, I'll bet one of them was you!
The lights are absolutely beautiful. We arrived at 6:30 and got lucky finding a parking space. We had a 2 year old with us, and she walked the whole way: we didn't even need a stroller, though it did ...

From what I have heard, very little is open on Christmas Day, but do check the various hotel restaurants. Hotel Albuquerque in Old Town has had some decent reviews for their restaurants.

It looks like the trailer will not be a problem according to their website:
"EXTRA PARKING FOR LARGER VEHICLES (TRAILORS ARE WELCOME)"
But they do not mention internet access which is required. My husband is self-employed and must stay in touch with his customers durings this trip.
