Seats in front of Exit row (middle)
Published (2009-12-18 19:29:00)
Thanks for the advisory. New(er) flyers should always ask the check-in agent or gate agent for a better seat. On United, when you check in, you can upgrade to the Economy Plus (E+) section for an additional fee. That section offers an additional 5" of legroom, and most likely, a seat that reclines.

British Airways strike
Published (2009-12-15 02:44:00)
As I am sure you may have heard, the union for British Airways' cabin crews, UNITE, have voted in favor of going on strike from December 22nd to January 2nd. As best I can tell, the strike is now a certainty unless they come to their senses and return to the negotiations. What is a traveler to do? I am supposed to fly from LAX to LHR and on to CPH on Saturday the 19th, before the strike is set to begin, but my return flight on the 27th...

Seats in front of Exit row (middle)
Published (2009-12-17 14:39:00)
We had the misfortune to be placed in the row in front of the centre exit row. These seats DO NOT recline. The ones in front do recline and therefore you will be squished in. Not a pleasant way to travel. Not that flying is pleasant but this makes it worse. Do not select any row in front of an exit row.

How to Get More Sleep in Flight
Published (2009-12-17 10:31:00)
I travel from San Francisco to London frequently. Timing my departure so that I can have dinner and go to sleep while it's dark out generally gets me there fresh and alert. In other words, FLY AT NIGHT if possible. I also use an inflatable back support called the "First Class Sleeper." This cradles/cocoons me gently while providing upper body support. Finally, if I MUST keep the arm rest next to me in place, I try to...

I try to stay away from pizza and ice cream. Older flyers and dairy don't mix.

There are airlines, particularly South West and Virgin and I think Hawaiian Air that charge each leg of a trip separately... so no up charge for one way flights.
Alternately, there is a "open jaw" fare... for trips where you fly to one city, travel overland, then fly home from a different city. There are rules... I believe that the flying legs have to be longer than the land leg. We are ...
