quote: Mike D, Whatever slip I have has been there from day one and the truck is now nine years old towing fine. I tow at two speeds--60 mph at 2400 rpm (third) and 45 mph at 3000 rpm uphills. As far as towing in O/D, when not towing (say 6000# GW) I run at exactly 2000 rpm at 70 mph in overdrive. I can't believe it's a good idea to run at 60 mph, 11,500 lbs, at 1700 rpm. rodeo, i think the real truck, the silverado, with the 5.3 is rated at 20mpg too... funny the 5.3 has 300 hp and toyotas new 4.6 has 310 and fords new 3V 4.6 has almost 300- (292). seems the general needs to beef up its 5.3 or the smaller motors are going to out power it.... like tundras little bit bigger 5.7 that has 381 hp.... -------------------- 2006 Starcraft 1700 I/O Sport Canary Yellow with Volvo Penta 3.0 2007 Toyota Tundra Double cab...

The info you posted helps me think about my Tahoe. The Torque Converter slips slightly going up hills at certain speeds. It has done this for a few years now. When I notice it I push the tow/haul button and/or put it in gear 3. When I tow I always keep it in 3 now and use the tow/haul feature. It has 152,000 miles on it now and the longer I can keep it all running the better!

How do I know when the T/C locks up or un-locks? Will keeping the shifter in 3rd keep it un-locked? From what I think know about Torque converters, it is the part that lowers the RPM's on the highway (like a 5th gear when cruising?) Mike:(2kwik)- Your truck seems to have a similar shift point. I found it seems to use alot of 2nd gear to get it moving on the highway from a merge. This recent pull to storage was a short one, about 18 miles...

quote: AS for the Ford F-150 it will drag the Taco around backwards, as well as the truck I drive. I think your giving your T100 based Tundra a lot more credit than it deserves. I'll bet the new Tacoma similarly equipped weighs as much as your Tundra and brakes as well or better. Sorry, but the V8 doesn't make it a safer tow vehicle. The current Tundra is a true full size truck, the same can't be said for yours. It's more...

Well I guess I better correct myself. I walked into the parts department and picked up a bottle of Slime. Heres what it says on the back of the ATV/Motorcycle bottle. quote: WARNING: For high speed applications over 45 mph use only as a repair (exception trailer tires). May cause excessive vibration when installed in front tires or all four tires. Heres what it says on the automobile bottle quote: WARNING: For maximum safety, inspect tires...

I have also been told (I get told a lot of things) that it could ruin my TPMS sensor if I use it. That does make some sense, I suppose, but I think that BMW used to include a can of it with their M5's and M3's that don't come with spares, but I think that they too have TPMS. So maybe my information was inaccurate. If I am on the side of the highway in the middle of the night with a flat tire, I won't give a carp about my...

Sway problems are caused by improper trailer set up. It is not uncommon for trailers to weigh more than the tow vehicle as is evidenced by nearly every Semi truck on the road. -------------------- "It aint rocket surgery"

I think possible reasons to buy the Tacoma are: (1) the Taco is around $5,000-$6,000 cheaper than a comparable F-150 with the 5.4 v8. This was comparing a 4x4 Crew-Cab Taco with a 4x4 Crew-Cab F-150. (2) The Taco will get better fuel economy. I’ll bet we are talking a good 3 to 4 mpg better. (3) The Taco is not as big as a F-150 so it is a whole lot easier to maneuver around parking lots etc. -------------------- Jim Phoenix, AZ USA 2002...

Walt the major problem here is the boat weights more than the truck even with surge brakes the danger of it pushing you right into and accident is much greater. The Taco may pull it, but not well and he said he had some steep grades. Talk about the tail wagging the dog, any fast move on the interstate and you're history. But be that as is may, I have scraped several of the blacktop. AS for the ...

My next door neighbor just bought a Diesel truck and had a real eye opener when he discovered the cost of maintenance. If you tow a lot or have a very heavy boat then there is no substitute for the diesel. Doesn't sound like that's the case so I would go with gas.

I don't use it. I have had three trailer tire failures and all were what you'd call catastrophic. The slime would have just made a mess to clean up. If you don't have a spare, you should spend the money there first. -------------------- "Mischief Managed" 2000 Regal 2550 LSC 7.4 MPI Bravo 3

Probably not the right Mike, but......... With the 4.8 I would never use O/D. I have a 5.3 towing 5500# and only use 3rd gear and tow/haul. If you tow in drive and it gets into O/D the torque converter is going to get more slipping use. (there will probably be comments that say T/H locks out the torque converter. Maybe so, but I have watched the speedometer drop while going uphill in third...

Yes, it saves springs and tires. You should have bearings repacked to prevent any water from collecting on them and flush the brake system for the same reason. You will be surprized at how nasty the fluid in the wheel cylinders is after just one season. Be sure to shade the tires with something to prevent UV weather checking.

Not too many years ago, Dodge wouldn't sell the highest power Cummins with the automatic. You had to get the manual to get the most power. And that 6sp should be a ZF transmission, which GM used as well. Nothing inherently wrong with it, as far as I know. As far as it jerking in between shifts, that depends on how good you are at shifting. -------------------- Formerly a 1997 Chaparral ...

lots. and then its available as a tow package on the ones that it doesnt come standard. depends on what u want, just look at the manuf'ers web sites. plus, u have a 2000 explorer so i doubt u are doing any super heavy towing anyway. so whatever u get if its a real truck or bigger suv should have plenty of stuff to tow whatever it is u tow with that 'sploder. -------------------- 2006 ...

Yep, I rotate trailer tires each spring. All my trailers (utility, flatbed, boat; tandem and single axle). Moving a tire from one side to the other, changes the direction of rotation. That is desirable, per my tire dealer. I won't tell you how long my tires last, nobody believes it anyhow. -------------------- The Old Goat
