ATF in oil, any thoughts? - Page...
Published (2009-12-16 01:31:00)
These are diesel engines, the oil is SUPPOSED to be black. If the black (soot) wasn't in the oil, it'd be sitting on the bottom of your pan or embedded in the bearing material, cylinder walls, cams, piston skirts, oil pump, etc. Also, black oil leaving a stain on your finger has nothing to do with sludge. If you really must clean the soot out, drain the pain, put a new filter on, fill it up with oil. run it for a while to get...

Cracked water pump?
Published (2009-12-09 16:00:00)
So now that I've had my say everywhere else, let's get to my problem: puddle of anti-freeze under the front of the engine. My guess: cracked water pump. It's been down to -10 or so here with the windchill the last few days. Let that be a warning to those who top up their coolant with water too often, like I apparently did! Any suggestions for quick and dirty fixes?

Number 3 cylinder problems,...

It does have all new valve seals in it. Busted out the feeler gauge last night and pretty much everything is out of spec. Gotta find some new shims and get everything back in line. Most of the intakes were tight and the exhausts were loose. It wasn't to far out, 1 or 2 thou, but number 3 was far out. Thanks for the input guys

I change about every 3k miles and am just thinking preventive measures as my oil seems pretty black come changing time. I was planning on doing this every time or every other time. ( side note: I'm trying out changing the filter every other change and letting it drain a few hours on the oil change). Maybe I'm just to attached to the color of oil I always had with the gas motor.

When head gaskets leak etc. the cylinders to do it are #2 & 3. Cylinders 1 & 4 rarely leak. Did you replace all valve seals etc? I would check the valve lash on all cylinders and see if that adjustment helps the compression. Once you're finished and have approx 1500 miles on the engine, re-check the torque on the head bolts. -Todd

There is a thread on the Aussie site about how to clean the sludge out of these engines. I have on mine run the engine oil cleaner stuff from KleenFlo and I think it has worked out alright. I used to only dump about 6L into the motor on an oil and filter change. Now I dump a full 7.5L in. It has taken a while to get to clean but now when I change my oil and wipe my fingers off they are clean...

There are 2 copies of the EPC that I've found online, and I do remember that the DVD version is way easier to use than the CD one. other than that, it's been far too long since I installed it, so I can't be of much help.
Serious bummer about ToyoDIY.. that was an epic site, imo.

Let's see, a 3L would be the second design, I assume you have the "bucket and shim" head and not the roller rockers with the cam off to the side? Did you check shim height with the refurbished valvetrain or did you just bolt everything back together? Break out yer measurin' tools and check your current specs against proper shimming according to the FSM. Might need to make a few changes; ...

The front of engine is a bit vague. More specific details needed or a pic would be even better.

No problem: You drive, baby gets strapped in the other seat and away you go. Or, wife drives, same scenario. What did you expect? You've got a two seater with some junk room behind the seat. I would not recommend mounting the baby seat SIDEWAYS on one of the jump seats EVER. If you and wifey have very skinny butts it might be possible to cobble a mountup in between each of you; some bench seat...

Several times I've seen the freeze completely ignore the frost plugs and just break out wherever it is. Just like I've frozen water in a plastic bottle and left expansion room up top, and the water just went sideways, blowing out the bottle and stretching the plastic.
Going as far as you did under your protection level, I'm really afraid you're totally hosed. Meanwhile am hoping not.

It'll blend evenly as it's distributed through the system just fine.
Side note: Make SURE you put the same kind of coolant in that it had before. mixtures can polymerize and do really bad things.

You can get mechanical pumps for 1KZ-TEs.. but you'll probably have to buy an electronic engine and spend the $1000+ for the pump, as the engines for your generation chassis were electronic only.
