Is Crysis even using my GPU?
Published (2009-12-09 22:47:00)
Looks like my next logical step is a new motherboard. Crap, already way over budget by getting a gtx 260 instead of a used 9800gt on ebay hah. Original budget was around $60.00-$70.00. I ended up spending $219.00 on the GTX, $100 on a new pc case, $15 for a hard drive cooler.

He may not "need" more than a dual core right now but if you are bothering to upgrade and want your system to last a while $40 more for a quadcore makes a lot of sense imo. 2 gigs of ram is likely fine. It's very easy to add more later anyway if you end up wanting to.

Quadro FX 3500 GeForce equivilant
Published (2009-12-14 21:02:00)
To sum my post up, Quadro cards are for 3D rendering and Geforce cards are for gaming. In terms of hardware the Quadro Fx 3500 dose seem similar to the 7900 series BUT the software is completly different. Gforce uses DX and Quadro uses OpenGL/CL. Using your Quadro could have a number of different results from giving you performance on par to a 7900 (Id say youd be lucky), to playable but with major artifacts, to the game not even starting....

Hi,
You don't mention which card you are using, besides an 8800GT. I used to
have a similiar problem with my old OC2 8800GT. Even though the card wasn't
apparently overheating, by underclocking the card (shader, memory and gpu),
I was able to get a very stable card.

It's good but overshadowed by the HD 5870.
Equal to better performance for a better price, better power efficiency,
better heat dissipation and DX11.

Whats the make and model of the PSU? There are adapters that take 2 molex
cables(4 pin) and turn them into a 6 pin PCI-E connector but in general, if
your PSU doesnt have enough cables it likely doesnt have enough juice
either.

That PS more than enough for 7600GS. For ref I ran one on 350W Celeron
system.
Try this PS calculator.

Ok so you probably know the required hardware but im giving a link anyway
http://www.thesims3.com/game/systemreq
I would think your best bet would be to get a motherboard with an onboard
chip that is above minimun spec and then you can always default to using
that to play Sims if the FX GPU is in fact totally unsurported as you fear
it might be.

That PSU should be perfectly fine. 400W on the 12V rails, you are good to
go for a 7800GS.
Are you buying this 7800GS used or cheap? You won't get a ton of
performance outta it, what are you using it for?

try using riva tuner / evga precision. there is an option to set the fan

as 3 during game play and lags for ard 30 odd sec and then comes back to
normal .. if i lower the graphic setting to a min it works fine .. but

Your CPU might be your limiting factor. At 2.5ghz, it may be what is
preventing you from enjoying the benefits of a GPU upgrade. I don't have
much else to offer, to be honest, but perhaps a mobo upgrade (one that
allows OC on the CPU) might be your answer to unlocking more performance on
your platform.

That's an AGP board right? If so your choices are limited and more
expensive than the should be but an HD3450 should be good for non-gaming
purposes for around $50.

With that budget, you can go with the best single-GPU card out there today-
the HD5870.

I would take the card back, or RMA it. Something must be wrong with it.
It is essentially a rebranded and overclocked 9800GTX, which has been
around for some time now, so there should be no bugs or issues with
drivers.
