Might as well. He could just sign an executive order tomorrow, according to some our talk radio heroes. Have you noticed, Macdak, how folks are now whining about why doesn't Obama just sign EOs to further his goals? Or why he doesn't just strongarm congress into passing bills he wants? When I started on TOL years ago, the worst thing a president could do, besides get a blowjob in the oval office, was to sign executive orders. To be a...

That's definitely all part of figuring it out, Forde. The endstate Obama wants to achieve has to be doable, of course. We can wish for a stable, Western-style democracy in Afghanistan, but I don't think we're going to be able to achieve that. I'm willing to settle for Kabul Pinochet, although you're dead right in your assessment that won't play very well in Peoria (let alone Paris and London). To, it would be...

Right here in the USofA, with what is widely regarded as one of the most open and transparent governments in the world, our political leaders struggle mightily to keep their voluminous and impenetrable work product tightly under wraps right up until the time comes to vote on it and make it the law of the land. More often than not, they succeed. Can I have a show of hands from everyone here who is sufficiently deluded to think that compliance...

As Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently pointed out, we won't have sufficient resources to finish the job in Afghanistan until we reduce our commitment to Iraq. Why do we need to keep 73,000 troops in Germany? Why do we need to keep 40,000 troops in Japan? Why do we need to keep 12,000 troops in Italy?: Why do we need to keep 10,000 troops in the United Kingdom? Assuming we could free up just half of...

The American economy is resilient and as long as capitalism is embraced we will continue to prosper. The pace of recovery will be dependent on how much government gets in the way of the American entrepreneur. imho.

I think it's just part of the cycle of politics. Today the GOP is "out," but that won't last forever. I predict that sometime in 10-20 years, they will regain control of Congress, regardless. Those people who are not particularly partisan will vote the Dems out after the Dems get arrogant enough and piss off enough people, just as the GOPers did in recent years. To me, the GOP does seem to ...
