Ok, last time... hopefully! It looks like I waited too long and the drive finally up and died. Screen was blank this morning. Hard booted it and it gets stuck at the "Welcome Powering Up" screen. I finally bit the bullet and picked up the biggest IDE drive at Fry's, a WD Caviar Ble 500gb 7200RPM (please let it be quiet enough!) model WD50000JBRTL beauty for a song with some price matching I talked them into. My problm...

The only Tivo that may be able to use the 1.5TB drives is the Tivo HD XL. Your S2 Tivo cannot access the entire drive so stick with a 1TB drive. 7200 rpm drives can mean high-heat and noise, but not always any non-AV/non-DVR drive can mean noise, again not always small cache/slower drives may have streaming issues and noise, again not always I bought a 320gb WD (WD3200AVJS) for about $60, love the freaking thing... its quieter than the cooling fan in my S2 (I'm using the Weaknes SATA-to-IDE adapter) I also have an old Seagate, 160gb, SATA 150 drive in my other S2... its loud as...

Hughes SD40DVR

After I pulled it out I ran Spinrite on the WD drive and it checked out just fine. I do have an update though to my last posting. It has started doing the random restart again with the Seagate drive, but not as nearly as much. I used WinMFS to do the copy. Anyone have any problems using it? Everything transferred just fine and it expanded the drive hust fine, just this random restart issue. Sean

Adding a 2nd Drive using WINMFS

Patience grasshopper. You would have been much better off transferring and expanding your single drive image to a much larger drive. With two drives you have doubled your chance of catastrophic failure.

I have a Series 2 model "TCD140060" that has a failing drive. I'm looking for replacements and saw on the Weaknees site that they only use the Seagate DB35 type drives since they are "DVR Ready" and list all sorts of reasons for it. Is that more expensive type of drive really necessary?
If not, can I use ANY IDE internal drive? I'm looking at a WD Caviar Blue WD5000AAKB 500GB 7200 RPM for ...

I declared the internal Hard Drive on my S3 "dead" after it fell into a constant reboot sequence. I tried Kickstart 57, 58 & 52 with no results.
I tried using WinMFS but I just could not get it to work, it looks like the drive was beyond recovery.
So I decided to "retire" the internal drive that came with the S3 and move the External 750GB drive internally ...

Well I guess the Hughes SD-DVR40 is not compatible with Western Digitals Caviar Blue Series drives.
Had a random restart problem after replacing the original drive with the Caviar Blue. Replaced the Caviar with a DB35 Seagate drive last week. Imaged off the Caviar drive and no problems at all.
No random restarts!

All,
My 2 Tivo disks are giving up the ghost, so I need to do a copy. For whatever reason, MFSTools and WinMFS can't copy my setup ( married pair of 1TB drives that have been expanded, etc., over the lifetime of my S3.) The setup works perfectly, but I'm starting to get stuttering and some reboots, so I'm going to swap out the drives.
Using DD just scares me to death; I'm not familiar enough...

I have a TCD140060 (Older series 2) (60Gb)that has the TRAY in it for a 2nd drive.
What do I do on WINMFS to the 2nd drive to be able to ADD it Into/With the existing drive ?
Just MFSADD ? (then set it to slave and split the power and install it with a dual connector IDE Cable ?)
thanks in advance

I am upgrading a series 2 TiVo using MFS Tools 2.0. I know there are newer programs out there like WinMFS but this question pertains exclusively to MFS Tools 2.0. My PC motherboard only has one IDE port and the rest are SATA ports, is there anything special I need to do with the SATA ports or can I upgrade as normal? Thanks in advance!
