No, I'm not missing the point. Rather, I making it clear that the competition that the FCC aimed to foster was competition between STB makers. The CCI flag doesn't "undercut the competition". Indeed, it fosters competition between STB makers, as i indicated earlier.

Bicker--Maybe I'm being cynical, but I think asking for permission to use the "privacy" mode was a way to request a waiver without directly asking for a repeal of the separable security rules. I have little doubt if the "privacy" mode is cracked a request will be made to the FCC to allow use of full decryption. At least some of the boxes are capable of "regular" decryption and PPV....

Sounds like a hardware problem. The only time it isn't hardware is that it can occur if you have a mis-upgraded disk. If this is a brand-new TiVo bought from retail, then I would return it for a new one.

Clicking typically occurs on A/V equipment (such as surround receivers) when the device loses the signal on the digital audio input -- as it does when you pause on the TiVo -- and then switches to check the analog input. This switch is done by physically moving a part inside the A/V equipment, and this causes the clicking sound.
On most surround receivers, you can prevent the clicking noise...

LA area: Called tonight at 10pm, and they're coming out on tuesday. $25
install fee, $1.75 a month for the card. They said they had no way in the
computer to tell the installer to bring 2 cards out at the same time, so
I'm supposed to bug the installer guy when he arrives and see if he has an
extra on him.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear that it's under aggravating circumstances.
To answer your question, yes, a signal that is "too hot" can cause data I/O problems AGC issues and other problems which can result in video issues or locking up the box all together. That's not to say something else might not be causing issues, but it's a start. I'd call the cableco and have them check on ...

Witth proper CableCard (and possibly SDV Tuning Adapter) setup, the only things youu won't be able to do with a Series 3 model TiVo are order Video on Demand and Pay per View from your remote. On digital channels you won't be able to select recording quality either.
Otherwise it is the same TiVo interface, with some added features.

This feature has been pretty flaky in general. I have similar bandwidth and can get Netflix streaming to my Series 3 OR my Xbox360. Both are wireless G connections to my Linksys Wireless Router.
More times than not, the Tivo streams HD then rebuffers, rebuffers... over and over. We'd switch to Xbox and it'd be flawless.
Why? *shrug*... better hardware, better implementation of the ...

Like you say, it can't hurt!
Can you elaborate on the cable in the classroom issue? I'd hate to be caught complaining about something about which I know nothing!
Also, expand on the "not allowing fair use" issue, please.

I'm noticing a change in the audio of my CC speaker tonight on ESPN for the MNF game. When I change to FSSW however it is fine. The sound I'm getting on ESPN is almost like a muffled sound.

AFAIK this is not as expected.
Verify your software version starts with 11.0d, (not "something like that"). If it doesn't, force an upgrade.
Do a hard reboot (unplug TiVo, wait a few seconds, plug in). Do this just to be sure even if you've already done it.
If it persists, you have a warranty case.

Whatever the new standard is FCC better be darn sure to include Satellite, IPTV and FIOS in the mandate as well to level the playing field and give consumers better options for switching between providers yet using 3rd party hardware & software.

What happened to the "rest" of the thread or former thread. There was some good information about cable types, toggling power switches and a whole bunch of other stuff.

I think that the ReadyNAS duo has some sort of HMO support, but I'm not
sure if handles video and I'd be really surprised if it could transcode
incompatible formats.

Sure you get the networks in QAM from your cable company, but have you called your cable company and asked them for a list of the clear QAM channels that they provide? Is it posted on their website?
