10 Days in Ireland

Hahaha. Sorry, Ring of Kerry, the most beaten of beaten tracks. Okay, try Tuam, not much tourist visited. Two things of note: The HIgh Cross in St Mary's is meant to be the highest in Ireland and Temple Jarlath is great but you will need to find when it is open. Tuam has (it always seems to me) more pubs per sq foot than anywhere in Ireland (okay there are lots, let's just go with that) and they are traditional. Places unvisited are...

Short term Car Insurance
Published (2009-11-27 20:11:00)
Mason, I've just cancelled car insurance with the Co op, when I bought a new car and found cheaper insurance elsewhere. I paid by direct debit and the payments have been cancelled from the next due date and haven't had to pay for the full year, nor any cancellation fee. I lost 3 weeks of the month, that's all, as I didn't cancel it the day before it was due. This is a way lots of people get away without insurance, well,...

living in Aberdeen: renting, etc?
Published (2009-11-29 23:03:00)
You are right that unfurnished rental accommodation is uncommon in Aberdeen, as it is in Scotland more generally. Given that there are likely only a couple of unfurnished rental properties available at any one time, this will limit your choices about where to live - take it or leave it.

If you reside in Europe (regardless of your nationality), you want an inter raill pass, available at statravel.com amongst others - your student son should have access to a student travel organisation (STA is worldwide but not the only one), or at the official site http://www.interrailnet.com/ . If you don't reside in Europe, you want www.eurail.com - again numerous travel providers can also sell it to you. The two passes are the same...

Ah, I see. Thanks for that. I get the impression that #1 thought that departure was imminent, as did I, hence the "any time soon". If the OP was thinking of setting off within the next few days (i.e. within a few days of 22 November), I think the warning was well-intended. Although I grant you there was some exaggeration, I think it was a fair synopsis of how, combined with the weather forecast, the Lake District was looking like to...

I remember clearly my first visit to London when, over a welcome pint, my hosts told me I must stand on the right when travelling on an escalator. They even stood behind me at the first escalator we came to and, within a split second of my stepping on asked me to recite the rule, which I did while shuffling sheepishly over to the correct side. Blah, blah, blah. Yeah, sure all that really happened. Here´s the original article from TimesOnline...

There's something new in Cambridge since your last visit - Christ's College is where Charles Darwin studied, shortly before he set off as naturalist / captain's companion on HMS Beagle, which led to his books "On the Origin of Species" and "The Voyage of the Beagle". There's a garden of South American plants and a statue of hi mas young man sitting on a bench arm, sculpted by a more recent Chist's...

Worthwhile advice, it makes things a lot smoother. I happens, to a lesser extent, in Hong Kong too althouth Hong Kongers won't actually shove someone standing on the left out of the way.

You will be boarding the tube at the terminal, so you will be guaranteed a seat. Select a seat next to an open area so if it fills up you will be sitting next to your luggage. Which one you get will depend on where in London you want to go; in general the Piccadilly Line is more convenient for most things.

Esentially, I am trying to figure out if securing the "work" half of this holiday is remotely possible. Andrew, as I understand it your question is really about how likely it is that you'll secure employment, rather than how much you can make. It doesn't matter how much the average pay is in this or that sector if there are no jobs available to you anyway. The answer to your question is ...

If you mean any time soon, the Lake District is a very bad idea, since most of it is just one large lake at present. And there are flood warnings for more up here, and also for floods in North Wales, which might make getting to and around Snowdonia tricky. Pembrokeshire is lovely, but maybe better in the spring, since the wildflowers then are glorious. I think I'd opt for Cornwall, which is...

The road is almost finished. It doesn't tear Tara up, it 'just' runs very close to the hill and is visible from the hill. The official line is here, while the Tarawatch website website gives the other side of the story.

1. It is possible but it is also possible you will be deported - it is at the discretion of the immigration officer and their superiors. One friend of mine was deported trying to re-enter the UK after his work visa had expired (he had no ticket home). Another friend (who did have a ticket home) was allowed to re-enter after his work visa expired despite still having a lease on a house (i.e not ...

Warning for London during summer months Please be aware that the tube does not have air conditioning. This is because it was invented before air con was, and the cost of installing it network wide has been put at several billion pounds, which is a bit too much to justify. Whilst the metropolitan, district and circle lines are not too bad because they're only just below the surface (and ...

Also, I understand I can go to Europe for 90 days as a visitor within a six month time frame, does this mean Europe as a whole or is the UK different?? UK is different. It isn't in the Schengen common visa area. Look up Schengen on Wikipedia for explanation.

I'm no expert but if your passport is cancelled and it has been through the washing machine several times I very much doubt if any airline will allow you to even step on their plane. The only harsh punishment I can see is wasting your money on a flight ticket only to be told you cant travel on your lame passport.

If I were you, I'd start researching your visa options first (ie which countries are likely to grant you a working visa) and then go from there. You'll find getting a work visa for the UK is not as straight forward as you'd first think. Out of interest, how can you have a fairly hot and cool summer? What do you mean by that one? PS Don't call it fall once you're in Europe, it's autumn :)

You can get rentals anywhere in the UK fully furnished, semi-furnished or unfurnished. Part furnished properties vary as to what is actually furnished. Our semi-furnished came with some couches, beds, book shelves, fridge and washing machine - the rest (kitchenware, cooking utensils, TV, etc) we had to purchase ourselves. Some landlords will be flexible with what you can bring and what it's ...

Doesn't really matter which way round you do it. If you go to Northampton last, it's a bit of a backtrack whichever way you do it. From that POV Northampton needs to be between Oxford and Cambridge, not at the end.

If you connect in London for your return flight home, you won't have to enter UK and don't need a visa. Make sure the connecting flight from Rome gets to the same airport, and that your luggage will be through-checked. It helps if you fly with the same airline or those in the same airline alliance. Failing that, most RTW ticket reservation can be changed except the first leg, often with a ...
