If you decide to follow steppenomad's advice and visit Petersburg, then you need to check the schedules as I believe that some trains from Petersburg to Vilnius will go through Belarus and others won't. Ruth

Kyev and KaZantip - 2010

No, racism is really not a major problem in Ukraine. You're very unlikely to be attacked for your race. The skinhead gangs that plague some parts of Russia are not rally active in Ukraine. Yes, is is worth heading to Kazantip. Its rather a hippy type atmosphere, but good fun. Public transport is not great but I'm sure you can get a marshrutka from Simferopol. However, the system is chaotic and you may have diffiuclty finding the...

BTW: Istanbul is just a kind of abreviation of Konstantinoupolis, as Izmir derived from Smyrna, Iznik from Nicea, Edirne from Adrianoupolis, Konya from Ikonion, Kayseri from Cesarea, etc. You find this kind of evolution of city...

Train Zagreb to Beograd

I don't have personal experience with that particular train arriving in Zagreb, however it helps that you will arrive in the train station (and not, for example, the airport). You have three full hours of leeway, so I'm guessing you'll have no problems. No guarantees, of course, but I think you should be fine. Dave

Where to go in Turkey
Published (2009-12-20 08:43:00)
If security of your possessions is the issue, Turkey doesn't have a lot of theft outside the big cities, and the parking areas at most sites have a watchman. I've never even given this a thought on three extensive trips to Aegean and Mediterranean Turkey, aside from taking the same preautions (locked doors, passport and valuables on my person, nothing of value visible in the car) that I would visiting the Queen. Farther east, I might...

Yes, I would also choose train over bus/minibus where possible, at least you can stretch your legs unlike being squeezed into a minibus/maxitaxi with more people than the vehicle is designed to hold.

If you exclude on eof the three, it should be Armenia (in my opinion). In 8 days, you'll see the capitals and little more. And half your time would be on transport. It is, of course, possible and 8 days in MUCH better than zero. For info on highlights of the 3 check out my blog Abkhazia & Georgia (some turkey) http://joestrippin.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html Armenia & N-K & Azerbaijan...

For a bit of countryside perhaps try the Lednice area which has forests and castles but is trickier to get around without own transport. Or try Brno which is a nice city - but then head out by bus (easy connection) to the karst caves for a day before getting back on the train.

I assume you know that you need a visa for Russia ...
Also, confirm - are you really talking about a 10-hour stopover in the middle of the night? Take a warm coat!

I'd encourage you to add Dortkilise (near Barhal) to your itinerary - such a beautiful church.
NE Turkey is safe, yes, no worries there. I'm not a driver myself, but it seems that it would be OK in terms of other drivers. You will need nerves of steel for the mountain roads, though.

Russia is the worst for this, especially in the Caucasus. Azerbaijan is also terrible, Armenia is nearly as bad. Georgia was dreadful (bent cops would call ahead when a foreign car was in the area so you'd get pulled over every 500m) but Saakashvili's reforms have really cleaned up the traffic police.
I don't think you should worry in Ukraine. I've drven a fair bit without problems. I was a ...

Whatever you can do at any larger airport: drink over-prized coffee, look at perfumes and bottles of liquor that you'd never think of buying outside an airport and read a book.
And, unbelievably but true, the airport has a website! http://www.ataturkairport.com/eng/index.php has an airport guide that should be able to prepare yourself better.

You haven't provided enough information. What is the total amount of time from your first entry to Russia to your last departure from Russia? If this time period is more than 30 days, then you have no choice but to apply for a 90 day double entry business visa.
Tourist visas are valid for a maximum of 30 days from first entry to last departure.
If your total travel time is less than 30 ...

I don't know your nationality, but most non-CIS need a visa to visit Russia. If you're going on a tourist visa, you'll need to get visa suport from wherever you're staying.
Some hotels offer no visa support, you basically you can't stay there on a tourist visa (unless some other hotel agrees to register non-guests which is theoretically not allowed)
Some hotels offer visa support and include ...

I love Vienna, but I have to warn you that it's not a budget destination. If you are going to be on a starvation budget like so many here, you may not be happy in Vienna. There are very few hostels there, so I advise arranging accommodation in advance if you're one of those people who will have heart palpitations if you have to pay more than 20 Euros a night for a place to sleep. If you are ...

Which Hammam would you recommend?
Any of Cemberlitas or Cagaloglu is fine.
* I would like to visit Pamukkale if possible, or at least Yalova/Bursa for the thermal spas. Do you think this is do-able within the 5 day and to see all the places listed above?
Five days are not enough to see and explore Istanbul. Pamukkale is far away on the other hand. So why don't you stay in ...

I think the answer is "no" but call the airline to be sure. Its no if both flights arrive and depart from the international terminal, so the thing you need to check is that Kiev counts as international for these purposes.

No problem walking in -5c. I cycled 25km in -5c to work yesterday. Won't kill you. Same answer applies in -20c.
Its just a question of having the right clothes: boots with good grip, coat, hat, scarf, gloves. You will see Ukrainian women walking on icy pavements in 10cm high heels, but that technique is hard to master so I recommend stout boots for foreigners.

First thing you need to know is that booking on Russian trains is impossible until 45 days before departure, so you might want to wait a few days as from today to 29 January is 47 days.
Second, you might send an email to Mark Smith, the man in seat 61 to find out when he posted that price of 280 euro. Unless there is a date indicated, it is impossible to know if the price is current. He does ...

I'm a UK passport holder and I encountered this problem last month when I got my Russian visa.
My passport has dozens of stamps, plus many places I visit don't stamp (EU travel) so I could easily fill two pages with a list of times and dates. I decided to list only the countries that stamp my passport, assuming the Russian embassy has no way of checking if I've been to France or not. I listed ...

If I understand you correctly, your choice is between June and September? You should have really nice weather in Istanbul in both these months. 20 degrees C or warmer - perfect for sightseeing. It certainly won't be cold (perhaps some rain, but not much)
I would probably choose June (longer summer evenings), but September would also be lovely.
