Oh, that's one I couldn't finish - Absolom! Absolom! by Faulkner. I didn't try very hard, though, as I really wasn't enjoying it at all. I was supposed to read Absalom, Absalom in graduate school. That particular seminar had us on a pace of a novel a week, not to mention all the secondary materials. It was not my only seminar that term, either. So it was one of those classes where something had to give. And by the point in...

exactly as much as was needed It depends on what kind of book it is. If there are long descriptions (of scenery, people, buildings, etc.), then pages and pages of text may simply be cut out in making the movie without losing anything at all. You don't need a five-page description of a mountain view when you can see it before you in the movie.

Besides My Name is Red, I remember giving up on Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses on page three, when I got to one of the worst paragraphs I've ever read anywhere. I made it to page 50 of My Name Is Read because a friend whose judgment I generally trust had highly recommended it. I decided to struggle through 50 pages to be sure I gave it a fair test. Otherwise I would have dropped it ...

******spoiler warning******* I read the book, which I thought was quite interesting, but not for the reason it was intended. I found the story an intersting study of a person (Ewan McGregor, and also his buddy Charlie) who's totally uneducated about the places he travelled in. He was just a spoiled kid, who liked the dust from under the wheels of his shiny BMW. Everything else was taken care ...
