I'd spend all 8 days in the north. Hanoi, Halong, the mountains around Sapa. Could be cold January and February. If you want warmth go to the south, Saigon and Mekong Delta.

Is Sapa touristy? Is Mont Blanc? Is Katmandu? Is Rome ? Is Patagonia? Is anything not touristy? You are a tourist, so I suggest you stay home so the rest of us see less tourist in Sapa.

Just go to the supermarket in Yangon, buy some bags of very finely ground Shan (real) coffee, mix it direct with the the hot water they give you for coffeemix. Let it settle a couple of minutes like a Greek coffee, and you're drinkin' in a civilized manner once again. Simple.

I thought you could arrange a visa six months ahead of time and then it was valid 28 days after you enter the country? Has this changed too? Six months... never... Standard used to be 3 months... Lately 1 or 2 months is not unusual.. depending on where you apply.... but I am sure they will not give you 6 months to enter.

Ive tried, God Ive tried,,,but coffeemix...ugh.. Amazingly we discoverd that they had real coffee and percolators gathering dust in the kitchen of our hotel in Sittwe. They thought that foreigners preferred those sad little packets. Thanks #7 Ill stock up with a packet or two before we start travelling. We also bring real coffee bags fom home..use them just as tea bags.Nice to share around too. We take coffee seriously !

There is absolutely GORGEOUS silk in hundreds of colors, thickenesses and grades available in Vietnam. They can also do beadwork and embroidery. I've had many items made there (in both Hanoi and Ho chi Minh), and all turned out lovely. Do know that you will have to go in for at least several fittings (especially with a wedding dress) to insure it will fit exactly right. You need to allow the time for this. Tim, I will have to say you...

Having lived here for many years now, I would say you are far better writing down the names of where you want to go to than trying to say it.

Hmmm, Khmer Kitchen? I think the folks at LP forgot to take it out of the ' Book' two editions ago.
I wouldn't recommend it.
Their signature dishes, the prawn amok and the pumpkin 'stuff' are tasteless.
Otherwise, thanks for the report.

Watch the video called Grace here I'm usually kinda neither here nor there with PETA but I just thought the ad was so funny, especially in that it disturbed people.

You can come to Hanoi train station, very near Old Quarter to ask some advices because I'm not so sure about the time.
About bus, you can go to Luong Yen bus station and take Hoang Long bus to go to Hai Phong.

OP - what do you mean by all seafood? Fish too? Or just crustaceans?
You're correct to say that both fish and crustaceans ̣(shrimps, prawns) feature a lot in Vietnamese cooking. I am allergic to crustaceans and have lived here for two and a half years with no problems so far. I have been told that this allergy is also quite common among Vietnamese people. I am sure I have eaten fish sauce...

Hi 1fc,
1. You can easily get your Cambodia visa on arrival at the airport for 20$ with passport photo.
2. You need to get your Vietnam visa before entry. This can be done in Siem Reap in around 4 days at around 40$ through an agent, Phnom Penh can be done by agent or direct with Embassy in 1 day for around 35$ or in Sihanoukville in around 1 day for around 35$ via agents or direct with the...

I'm riding that way too, in early December.
Give me a yell if you decide you'd rather not do it by yourself and the dates sound about right.

Your 30 day visa waiver gets cancelled when your exit to Cambodia, so you only have the 15 day visa waiver when you re-enter by land. You could just stay a couple of extra days in Cambodia, get a short extension in Thailand for 1900 baht, or risk over staying, not recommended. You could also fly back to Thailand on AirAsia from PP.

I'll be in Vietnam for the first time in December-January, so this response might be a little premature. But I've traveled elsewhere in SE Asia, and never had any need for a travel agent or tour outfit. I planned this trip using a couple of guide books to develop a rough itinerary ( Hanoi-Lao Cai/Sa Pa-Hoi An/Hue-Nha Trang). For lodgings, I used the guide books, the LP Web site and TripAdvisor, ...

I was outraged. No one spoke any English
Note to all who travel in SEA: Getting outraged will not solve your problem, and will probably make things worse. Always remain calm and smile; anger is not a motivator and is deeply embarrassing to its recipients. Can make a relatively small inconvenience into a nightmare.
As for "no English spoken", is this a complaint? Remember where you are....

My family is still in Vietnam right now. Our hotels and tours are organized by Aurora Travel that runs the http://www.vietnamstay.com website and everything has been fantastic since we arrived. We've got good hotel rates and itineraries and felt much pampered over the past few days. Will post back soon.
