pgwickstrom Hotels and hostels in Chongqing sell tickets for the cruises, or places such as Sims in Chengdu do as well. http://gogosc.com/enly_tours.asp Agree with john555 - it will be cool to cold, very grey, and quite boring being on the boat.

Chinese visa dilemma
Published (2009-11-25 23:02:00)
I thought that one could not get mainland Chinese visas in Taiwan because the Chinese government believes Taiwan to be part of China. Is there even a Chinese embassy or consulate there? If you apply for a new Chinese visa in HK then your current second entry will be cancelled. This is done all the time and would not be a problem. I would get a new double entry visa, fly from HK to Taiwan, then enter China, head for Japan and then return to...

as soon as you come out of arrivals, there are a row of desks from the Hotels and a few coach companies. They will take you to your hotel. I can't remember operating times or cost (HKD$125 ?). look here: http://www.hongkongairport.com/eng/transport/to-from-airport/index.html

Tibet in January

It is possible to change agencies once in Lhasa but this requires extra paperwork and the agreement of both agencies so many agencies just say it is not possible! (as they don't won't to do the extra paperwork) Getting an agreement from both agencies usually involve paying some profit for two companies, which may make the trip for the tourists more expensive... something to avoid...

You can make reservations in advance over the web for limited expresses and shinkansen operated by JR East only (which means you can't do it for the Tokyo-Osaka run, operated by JR Central, or any trains in the Kansai region, among others). You must pick up your tickets at a JR East ticket window by 9pm on the day BEFORE the scheduled departure. This effectively eliminates the possibility of booking anything for your date of arrival,...

nope, started at midnight on the 25th. It should be noted that it doesn't apply to RMB10 fares and that there is some confusion among drivers about this.

With those passports, a transit visa isn't essential for under 24 hours intl-to-intl connection. Each time you arrive in Beijing, you will pass through a specially marked desk at immigration for "international transit" and show your passport and (onward) boarding cards. After you pass into the next area is where you need to look for an exit. You may need to be polite, show the gatekeeper your ...

There is only one particular part of the TLG trek which is difficult for some eg The 28 bends or something like that. if you find the going too tough you can always hire a horse for that section.
plenty of them around that area. The rest of the trek are pretty easy, it is just long and depends on how far you want to go, you can stop over at Tina's guesthouse or Something similar. We did close ...

Will be visiting Mongolia with a friend in Feb-2010 for the lunar new year festivities. From the info I got from Mongolian friend, the airlines, trains, inter provincial transport run more or less normally though less frequently. The whole country is covered under (knee deep to metre in places) snow is my understanding. We'll be employing 4wd jeep to travel anyway, so, not really worried about ...

Yes. it is possible to make this trip
How much it will cost will depend upon a number of factors but it isn't simply paying for the guide. I suggest you read this posting from 2008: self drive in China - the definitive thread .
I can't answer your questions about travel conditions as I haven't made this particular trip but I don't think snow will be a problem. Check historical weather ...

30 countries? And this is the first time you've experienced this? While i'm not disagreeing with your observations, they are nowhere near exclusive to China. India, Egypt, Azerbaijan and countless others are as bad if not worse. I've lived 2 years, off and on, in China. Now is tame compared to 10 years ago.

Lijiang old town is really just one big Chinese tourist trap now. Some people like it, some people don't. You obviously don't. But since you've already made your way to Lijiang, try staying in one of the smaller satellite towns like Shuhe. It's much less developed and noisy than Lijiang old town.
I personally also like Dali better than Lijiang.

Hi, there should be lockers available at the main railway station. You can take the Shanghai Metro Line 2 to Longyang Road and then take the maglev train to Pudong Airport. It will go each every 20 minutes. I don't think it will be busy at around 4:00pm. For the tour in Shanghai, you may go to Bund, Yuyuan Garden, then Jin Mao tower, and then transfer to the airport. Good luck.

Well, you're going to have to land in Japan at an international airport and they are all cleverly designed to be relatively near big cities. You can then proceed to a rural area by train or bus or whatever. There is no reason you can't visit Okinawa if you want to, the island is not off limits.

There would be time, but remember that you would need a visa. The cost of that could make your ten hours pretty expensive. Also remember you need time either side of that ten hours to go through immigration both ways. I'm assuming your baggage is checked through to your final destination - but if not, you would need much more time to collect it and check in for your next flight.

The test flight from Ngari Kunsha Airport is going to set off on 1 July 2010, but civilians probably have to wait until 2011 to be able to use this airport.

You should get the Tibet Travel Permit and Aliens Travel Permit together at the same tour agency, generally speaking, the TTP is for Tibet entry, the ATP is for traveling to other places in Tibet.
You cannot just get a TTP from one agency, then get another ATP at another tour agency.
If you just get a TTP to get to Lhasa, then join another tour, I think they will fake your exit and entry ...
