Puerto Escondido advice

Good maps are hard to find, and I suspect most travellers aren't that skilled in reading them. I asked my local Mexican consul for a (free) map, but they wouldn't give me one; buy one from a private vendor, they told me. The colour map in the front of my lonelyplanet guide is good for planning a trip, and showing natural geography (mountains, for example, which greatly affect travel times), and the chapter maps are okay for detailed...

Tulum - Accomodation

Nothing is very cheap in Tulum Hotel zone anymore. It has been discovered and is in every travel mag out there. suggest you rent a car and go from place to place in early am checking out places. ALWAYS see the room or hut first. Best to have rental cat so you can secure your things as never heave in your room or hut. Photos see my website wolfcalls.com. The beach is lovely. However you can stay cheaper in Playa del Carmen. Remember food in...

Puerto Escondido advice

Ooops, mclarjh, I forgot that road maps of Mexico aren't sold in every corner store in USA or around the world. So, hopefully OP will pick one up in her travel. Please report back to us about what you found lodging-wise and your experiences. Thanks.

Birding in the Yucatan
Published (2009-12-04 03:00:00)
We've had good luck at both. As the previous posters have said, the two locations have different habitats and avifauna. Ecocamper is right- some of the best locations are the public archeological sites because the birds are protected and used to people. You might want to find a copy of the two best birding guides for the area; they have specific site information and lists: Steve Howell's 'Bird-finding Guide to Mexico,' and...

Maybe start in Mexico City since you like art. Also you can attend Museums and get an Historical perspective plus the Pyramids neasr there. Also the food is good. Then head to Tulum for the beach and more pyramids. I have met some people who have organized their trip by the pyramids.

Fantastic Mexican cook book?
Published (2009-12-03 07:45:00)
Diana Kennedy is great, but her cookbooks often make you work very, very hard. The ingredients listed are often hard to find. I like "Taste of Mexico" by Quintana, and "Mexico—The Beautiful Cookbook", which is inspiring as well as beautiful. By the way, I do have most of DK's cookbooks, but use them less. I note that since retiring to Mexico, I cook much less Mexican food at home. Why bother, when it's good and...

I've done it before, though I think it's changed a fair bit (for the better) since then.

It's not a good idea. Nobody does it. Baja is far too big, there's not much between Ensenada and Cabo, the mileage would kill you, the rental company won't let you drive offroad to the good spots, etc.
Take a plane, or the bus.

Bacalar....fort, lake, cenote
Chetumal...good food, interesting museum, ruins on the way to Xpujil
Xpujil....ruins all over the place. Base yourself there to see Calakmul, Becan, Balumku, Homigero, Xpujil and more

I did it years ago but you are not suppose to take Mexican rental car out of country. Also you will freak out when you find out the drop off fees for dropping off a Cancun rental car to Mexico City. Take like a GAP tour or do it yourselves on the bus. Lots of old posts on this branch discuss how do do this.

I have been saying the same all year - just because drug possession is de-criminalized doesn't exactly make it legal and, yes, if you get caught you will face all kinds of grief.

Mexico city airport bus information at this link
http://www.larpman.com/transportpages/buspages/bus airport.html
larpman site has lots of other good info re buses
From my 5 minutes of research, it looks to me like the following is an easy way to do it--take ETN luxury bus PV to Guad and then stay with ETN from Guad to Queretaro. Transfer to Primera Plus from Queretaro to airport.

You can get the internet access anywhere. Telmex is Mexico's main (only?) provider of telephone lines and they have an internet service that gives fast download speeds. My link downloads a 10 MB file in under 20 seconds. You can get that easily enough in any city. Many ;Mexican cities have direct flights to Houston from a nearby airport - here are a few I know of:
Guadalajara
Guanajuato

I loved my trip to Baja California Sur. One of the best in my life!. Baja is enourmous, but super super nice.
It is going to be a little cold (I am mexican), but it is worthy. Just consider that temperature is not hot.
You can stay at Espiritu Santo Island if you want a full experience of a desertic island. You can camp there and in the morning with luck you can see dolphins or seals. ...

Porkchop -- It's great that your trip is finally about to start. Since you are willing to wander a few hours off of your DF-Oaxaca route, consider visiting either Cuetzalan/Yohulichan or Chignauapan/Zacatlan. Both of those areas are in northern Puebla, separated from one another by a rugged green mountain range which is inhabited by very traditional Nahua and Totonac people. Chignauapan is a ...

Chitzen Itza is spectacular.. If you have never seen it - I would call it a "must see." It has the best preserved ballcourt of any ruins and the frescos are sharp and well preserved. It's a very large site and anyone that hasn't seen it, should. Downside - it's crowded and touristy.
Palenque is also spectacular, somewhat less crowded, but set in a more remote jungle area with howler ...

They're more or less the same as the colectivo shuttles are regulated by the airport authorities and unions above them. So with that said the cheapest is to take the ADO/Riviera bus from the parking lot between the national arrivals (llegadas nacionales) doors of terminal two and terminal three. It goes from the airport to the Cancun bus station in on Av Uxmal & Av Tulum (hwy 307). From ...

I wish I could give you more definite information. All I really know about the butterflies is a video my SIL showed us several years ago. I can't even tell you exactly which place she went, if there are more than one. Nor what date she went, which would have been helpful. My only point is posting is to let you know she found it very cold there during her visit, not sure if it is in the ...

In practice no - generally all taxes are included in the price of an airline ticket and that price is the same regardless of nationality. Now, if a Mexican got a return UK charter flight (which does not include the taxes) from the UK to Mexico then they would not have to pay the "tourist card" fee of around 20 USD separately (on departure) which a person of any other nationality would but that's ...

It is sad and a shame. It should not happen. Tourist should travel with a partner. Was she by her self. You should be able to trust a taxi.
What part of Mexico is Cuernavaca? Is it in Northern Mexico?
