Missing System Memory?
Published (2009-11-26 14:44:00)
Yes, the nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics chipset uses shared memory, basically using some of the system memory for video RAM. So with your graphics chipset, you will not be able to use all of your system memory for the operating system, and it makes sense for Activity Monitor to reflect that fact. Trevor

Apple airport express question..
Published (2009-11-26 07:49:00)
thanks delta. I have gotten the airport utility to find the AE now but when I try to 'connect to my existing network' the AE cannot find it. Im trying to use the AE to connect my G5 to my existing Linksys wireless network.

how quiet should a Mac Pro be?
Published (2009-11-27 11:48:00)
yeah, mine don't roar, either.. in fact, I have to listen to notice the MP sound at all. it has never sounded like it was laboring at anything. right now, as the 3D rendering blasts away, I am hearing what I believe to be the fans...they don't sound any louder (to my recollection) than when the machine is idling. by comparison, I have 2 mac minis, and when Safari so much as opens a web page with an animated graphic, the fans rev up,...

yeh... mine is pretty noiseless.... the fans never roar.... if there is any noise its from the hard drive tracking.... but I am going to be listening a lot more to it now!

Seagate microdrive will not erase.
Published (2009-11-25 04:14:00)
I have this Seagate 6GB Compact Flash MicroDrive CF II card ST1 I can not do anything with. Disk Utility will see it as a drive without volume. I can not erase it nor create a partition on it. There was some info I found that it use 5V instead of 3.3V like the usual CF cards do to operate. But since DiskUtility sees it this may not be a problem. Does anybody have experience with these. I was going to use it in my old Pismo with the CF to IDE...

No entry sign on mac pro

I don't have any experience with this, but some postings on the Apple discussions site indicate that the normal installation of 10.6 effectively does an archive & install, but without the previous system folder.

It is probably not recognized by the system and since video is required to POST, it is not posting? I have no experience with replacing Apple parts with non Apple parts when it comes to laptop screens.

New HD for MBP(advise me)
Published (2009-11-27 22:17:00)
No need to re-think everything but I have both a Hitachi HTS722020K9SA00 (7400 rpm) and a WD WD2500BEVE (5400 rpm) installed into my mbp and there is only 4 degrees difference in temps. The Hitachi has been an excellent drive and runs around 36-38 C and the WD hangs at about 34. The WD is a fine drive as well. No problems with either after about 2 years.

Do they appear in System Profiler? If they do it's an application software problem, most likely.

System preferences/Desktop & Screensaver prefs
Click the Screensaver tab, then the Hot Corner button.
Click whichever corner you like, and choose Put Display to Sleep (or sleep screen)
Then, simply drag your mouse to that corner, and the screen will go black (the system remains awake, and it's not an active screensaver, the screen is simply black)

You can get a similar new Mini from Apple for about the same price. As far as I can tell though, it's 2.26 GHz, the drive options are 160, 320, or 500 GB and the lowest amount of RAM offered is 2 GB. I'd compare to the Apple Store and double check your specs before buying.
That G4 is indeed ancient, but RAM and OS cleaning may restore quite a bit of the speed for quite a bit less.

As long as you have a compatible wireless card in your Mac, like Apple's official AirPort Extreme card , it can connect to any brand wireless router as long as it meets the specs (Wireless A, B, G, or N), although it is a bit pricey compared to other cards.
Many cheaper off-brand PCI wireless cards will also work with your Mac, although I don't know any off the top of my head.

Fan controller for PPC Mac Mini?
there is a software tool that does this, but requires Intel.
Is there something for the G4 Mac Mini, too? My googling is turning up nothing so far.
thanks!

Depends how "totally dead" it is.
If you have no way of powering it up, then your best hope is to take it to bits.
But if you can power it up, then you may be able to get the CD to eject, depending on the state of the rest of the Mac.

As was pointed out in a previous post… A new install has a few maintenance processes to go through before everything is running normally. The most intensive job is to reindex the drive(s) for Spotlight. Once complete, you should have your responsiveness back.

battery issue
I have bought an MacBookPro with a bild-in battery.
Is there a device ( a kind of external battery) that I can plug-in when my laptop's battery is empty on ultra-long flights with no electrical power at my seat?
I'm using my laptop all the time, in the office and at home. If I correctly understood, when the battery ...
