I know EXACTLY how you feel! I've found some comfort in a website called sizzle bop. I saw Carol Barnier (the owner of the website) speak at a hs convention and her words are so supportive, so loving they help me to "see the gift" that I OFTEN loose in my child. She has written several books as well but her website is full of interesting and often humorous tales that help me cope with my ADHD (imphasis on the H here)...

My girls take the generic Dexedrine and it seems to work fine. It could be a dose related thing--esp. if she has grown at all. Puberty is not fun for adjusting meds. Now for seizure meds, my 14dd MUST have the name brand or we are in big trouble--seizures, toxicity, etc. 13dd though on the other hand is doing fine with the generic Lamictal.

I have a son a lot like that but he is 5 . When he was 3 he was a lot like your dd . I think my son has a very mild Aspergers or PDD-NOS although the developmental ped . disagree . I am not saying that your daughter has that but usually a mom's instinct is right . I would suggest you to take an app. with a developmental pediatrician ( maybe two for a second oppinion) if you care about a dg. if not just keep teaching her as much as you can...

hs baby, same here....it was GREAT the first month, then it leveled. Which ties in to: Ottakee, she has had a growth spurt...i guess that can happen in 3-4 months. Combined together I believe because of the growth spurt she has leveled off. Like you other dd, my dd does fine with generic seizure meds. But, the behavior meds may be different. I am going to "test try" the aderall for brand for a month just to determine if i...

Isn't Barton a complete program--reading instruction, etc?
Apples and Pears is WONDERFUL but it is a spelling program. It can help with a child's reading but it is NOT a reading program at all. I just Apples and Pears along with the I See Sam books from www.3rsplus.com or www.iseesam.com Together these work very well for reading and spelling---and I think a lot cheaper than Barton....

Unfortunately, the only way to know is to try it because everyone reacts a bit differently to medecines. It's worth $30 to give it a try for a month and see if it makes a difference. OTOH, has your dd grown since her dose was last adjusted. As you gain weight, you need a larger dose. Puberty can also affect dosage. FWIW, my ds takes the generic versions of the 2 medecines he's on and it doesn't ...

This year he is simply using Megawords and having him read more. I think it's been helpful for him to read along *some* with audio books that are on a
6th-7th grade reading level. He also daily reads along with bible on audio and SOTW.
He is *really* enjoying reading this year as long as I don't force him to read for long sessions at a time *and* let him have some say-so in book choices ...

Yes and no. "Dyslexia" is actually not an official mental health diagnosis and a lot of professionals don't use it. They use another term that means the same thing.
You can get an evaluation done either privately or quite possibly by your school system. If the school does it, their testing will be free. Write a letter to the director of special education stating that your child struggles ...

They would typically see everything as pictures or movies in their mind. Everything has to be concrete. The idea of love, air, God, etc., need to be put into pictures for them. They will struggle with empathy: their mind is wired to be self-focused. Rewards and reinforcers will go a long way to teach social skills. Social stories can be made up for any situation and are simple enough for anyone ...

Glad you are getting some help. Good therapists will have ideas you can do at home and later might be able to give you an at home therapy plan where you only have to see the therapist once a month or something.

I would have him evaluated by an OT ( Occupational Therapist) that specializes in sensory issues. If it is sensory, a good OT will be invaluable. If not, he/she will be able to point you in another direction.
Your pediatrician should be able to find an OT for you. In our state, a prescription is needed for an evaluation. It is perfectly acceptable to meet with a couple of OTs berfore ...

I am sooooo with you. My 12yo is the same exact way including the dyslexia. He does well with me right there urging him on and giving him pointers, but leave him to do something on his own.... UGH. You'd think it was torture (for both of us). I can't decide if I've hand-held too much or its just the way he is and he'll come around eventually. I taught my 9yo daughter the same way though ...

I think that projecting an attitude of confidence is the best approach. Something like, "Yes, we've identified some learning issues. We are SO glad that we homeschool so we can proactively address those issues and get him exactly the help he needs. No red tape!"
