So far, my son doesn't even consistantly produce dated, legible work. Sigh. I guess we have no where to go but up. As far as subjects go: My son himself has changed piano around to meet his own goals. This is self-directed. On the one hand, I'm delighted that he is actually self-teaching in something - anything. On the other hand... He quit lessons this year, since he hasn't really gotten anywhere the last few years, and is...

Opinions on BJU algebra 2?
Published (2009-11-25 15:03:00)
Loved it for DS, planning on using it for DD. The Algebra 2 teacher is one of their best math teachers. I really liked that with the dvd, it runs itself. All explanations, calculator instruction, test prep, word problems. All you need to do is grade the tests. Level wise, it isn't up to Chalkdust level, but neither of my kids did well with Chalkdust. I just took dd out of BJU to do geometry with Chalkdust, it was a disaster, and just...

This may not be quite what you have in mind, but in the summer before my eldest started 9th grade, I asked her if she imagined that she would attend college. She said, "Yes." (Had she answered "No", I'm not sure what I would have done!) Given her answer, I asked her to find six colleges that sounded interesting. I gave her a few books to look through to help her out with this. As I recall they were:...

Thanks for the link. That looks like the type of book I'd like to have for a reference. I like outline showing what to teach first, second, third. That main outline could be tweaked a bit. I also like the book lists to read.

Well let me say that our first and most important goal in educating our two boys is to instill in them a LOVE for the Lord and to equip them to go out into the world and defend their faith with confidence. That being said then there is the academics. With my oldest it has been hit and miss in some areas of his education. For instance, he really could have used more essay writing and research ...

I think either would probably work for you - I'm not sure that, given your goals, if the classical/koine difference is the main thing to conside (either sounds like it would be fine). Other things to think about : You might want to check out the required texts - see if you can see samples online, read reviews - get a feel for them, and see which one you like better. See which professors...

Funny you should mention it -- I just picked that up at Border's yesterday! I love Bill Bryson, and while at the store started reading the section on all the words he invented. I figured I should go ahead and buy it as my high schooler also loves Bill Bryson and has more Shakespeare in his future. Bill Bryson makes most anything more palatable! ***edit**** I wrote this post after a ...

In India, most public schools are poor and are primarily for those who can't afford private school. As one said, "We call them 'tree schools' because a lot of them consist of one teacher with a blackboard under a tree and a huge number of students." The private schools are where those of the middle class and up go are very demanding. The middle class ones our friends went to don't have as many...

This is what I know, it varies from state to state, and college to college: Math: 3 cr. (but a lot of colleges want to see the 4th as precalculus) Science: This one was tricky, no one cared about physical science, but it is prerequisite to the following requirement, which seems standard: Biology, and two sciences after it that have biology as a prerequisite. Ds did biology, chemistry, ...

Our experience is that my oldest tested into Engineering Calculus (the one you need for physics w/calc) and is doing fine, without having taken college pre-calc. He completed Saxon Precalc (called Advanced Math) with a 93-95% average. If they have an A in Trig/Precalc, and tested solidly, not borderline, into Calc on the placement test, they probably have a good chance of doing fine in ...

Few thoughts: What we like and what the kids like can be worlds apart..... because we have already been through math. First kid, math curriculum guinea pig, both kids, liberal arts bent, can't fill in the gaps. I own most of Chalkdust (wanna buy my prealgebra book??). I love Chalkdust, and wish I could have had it when I was in school. Both kids can't do Chalkdust.... I just tried it with my...
