Actually, there is a general aversion to making stuff unless it is absolutely necessary. Rent or buy is the rule. Partly because of time constraints and partly because there are many props people with limited construction skills. A good props person has a huge file of contacts of where to get stuff. However, I used to brag that I could make something faster than you could rent it. That was only sometimes true but I liked the challange!

ISA USB adapter
Published (2009-12-12 12:39:00)
Hi! Would there be any interest in an 8 bit ISA USB adapter? I saw a recent thread on CCTALK mailing list on the subject and wondered if there were sufficient interest to do VCF group project. Working with Chuck and Hargle, there have been a couple recent VCF homebrew projects that turned out well (XT-IDE, AT2XTKBD) Here is the thread on CCTALK: http://classiccmp.org/pipermail/ccta...er/279840.html Of particular interest is this comment...

The rule for adding capacitors is parrallel is the same as resistors in series. I would attempt to stay as close as possible to the original design specification. Given that the tollerance of those fiter caps is about +/- 20%, I think you would be just fine replacing that bad cap with the 18000MFD cap. The test for power regulation of your board would be to look at the DC voltage on the AC scale of you multimeter. If the the ripple value...

ISA USB adapter

Doesn't a USB controller depend on the CPU to function? Its an interesting proposition to add USB to an 8 bit machine, but what do you envision it being used for? Are we talking mostly HID devices? or Mass storage?

Hi Genocho, This is an XT class machine. I think the 5,25 external floppy should just work with a standard drive. The harddisk is a problem. This computer has the BIOS harddisk type in ROM, you cannot change it. So it only works with the same type of harddisk that Schneider offered. Unfortunately I do not know which type it was.... Most of the Schneider PC's were ...

I am under the impression that the software for a USB device is much more difficult than what we've done with XTIDE. What kind of drivers would we have to start with?

I think some of the older Suns used Plextor drives; the kind with CD caddies. They're pretty good units; the downside being the caddies.

Does it mess up in DOS or Windows? Each video card needs a specific driver in Windows and will crash loading one for a different card. The only jumpers for VLB cards would be the bus speed which are generally the same as the CPU BUS speed (25, 33, 40, 50 Mhz). Most VLB cards do not like 50Mhz without plenty of wait states if even then, 33 is the most common. What CPU do you have? Which ...

Here's the problem, as I see it. Your damage could be just about anywhere--and in multiple places. Or you could be a freak of nature and the damage could be a single component and easy to repair. With a reversed power supply, it's impossible to say. Personally, I would not attempt this repair myself without at least a decent oscilloscope. There is potentially a lot of signal tracing ...

You are in need of non-conducting standoffs. Any local computer store in your area should have them. If not, check out this mail order link from MicroCenter.Com: http://www.microcenter.com/search/se...up=byopc_ca se&

I believe it is a custom made prop, designed partly based on a C64 keyboard but there is one row too many function keys plus some extra keys on top to be an accurate match. It could be based on a different computer as well, but I'm almost entirely sure it is a prop built for a particular purpose. You'd better build one yourself if you want the exact same look!

The traditional way to get spindle speed right is to use a line-powered strobe light (a neon lamp, old-style (iron ballast) fluorescent, or best, an LED night light) and the strobe disc that's glued to the spindle flywheel (If you've lost the strobe disc because of the glue drying out, you can make one). Adjust speed until the strobe bars appear to stand still. No computer ...

Phil, I'm taking a slightly different approach. I'm using a uC and simply using the SPI interface to oversample the data stream by 4x. This might not be fast enough to write a floppy, but should be enough to read one. If it flops utterly, I'll try using a low-end DSP to do the dirty work. As Dwight mentioned, the DSP approach is definitely the way to go on MFM emulation, which needs to ...
