Making my own CPU
Published (2009-12-21 17:51:00)
I have now gotten as far as putting the controll part into a software TTL simulator. I use CEDAR Logic 1.5, because it got one of the best easy-to-use and most TTL-like interfaces of all the freeware Logic simuators. CL got a wide support of single gates, but when it comes to the more complex IC's, I've had to combine simple logic and some of the standard functions to get it to equalent the TTL chips I am working with. I found and...

Very cool and great job! Did you use some preexisting schematics for that or did you whip that up yourself? Either way very cool and thanks for the video What are you planning on doing with it from here?

I had a grand scheme to try to build simple 4-bit adders and build HUGE low-cost panels of them and translate x86 instructions to whatever scheme I ended up using.. Needless to say with little electronics skill this never got past the "I drew a circuit diagram" stage. Good luck though!

I would suggest the use of GAL and PAL chips to help reduce the logic count.

The good old Z80. One of my favourite CPUs. One day as a learning exercise (maybe this winter..which for us is the middle of the year 2010) I will get into one of the kits that are often discussed here. Tez

ET-3400 vs. ET-3400A clock...
Published (2009-12-21 15:07:00)
Gang, A Heathkit model ET-3400 recently sold on eBay. I noticed from the auctiva pictures ( http://cgi.ebay.com/Heathkit-ET-3400...15172007r31268 ) that it has a 4 MHz crystal, which is what is specified in the manual to convert an ET-3400 for use with the ETA-3400 or EWA-3400 memory I/O expansion. Here's a link to a page that has several manuals for assembling and operating these units: http://www.classiccmp.org/dunfield/heath/index.htm...

Yea I've got a machine, maybe even the space invaders (if one of the tapes in the loft is it and it works) game to see if its the same as yours. Well I have found the joystick he made that has a few wires cut off from when he at some point removed it they are still in one of the boards. I will have to make a list of what wires are not connected to anything and what they are actually connected to, what seems to be missing a wire etc and...

If anyone's interested, there's currently one for sale on ebay here - still going for 99p! It looks, err, fairly well loved.

I've seen stranger instruction sets. How about an OISC? Or something like the MAXQ2000 from Maxim. Whatever you choose, my hat's off to you for carrying it through.

I don't have one, I lusted after one when I was a kid. There is one however (with huge provenance) just up the road from me in the entrance hall of "Watford Electronics" in Luton, it's in a very dusty case in a corner under a laptop, and probably is the reason that "Watford" started off, back in the days when they were a "proper" outfit.

I was wondering if anyone has a source for colored ink for the Okidata 182 Turbo. And by this I mean a single color ribbon other than black. I seem to recall that I used to have a green ink ribbon for this printer, and also a red one, but I don't know where to source them.

There was a small commercial business in all manners of KIM-1 enhancements, including even a S100 style enclosure with a single floppy drive. This doesn't surprise me in the least--some of the KIM-1 aficionados could be almost fanatical.

I take it that there's a real 3B1 under it all somewhere? Could that be a VoicePower card? There are a few of them still out there, answering the phone for collectors.

I had about 5 of these machines complete with crates full of cards, manuals etc etc. I still have some parts but not much. I gave everything to Getronics who has started a private collection of Olivetti equipment (as they own the brand now).

Sorry if I have so many questions at first. Maybe I should've split them up. If anyone can help (especially with the SWTPC), I'd be most appreciative! Kyle

Most of the early MSX software will run on a MSX1. Make sure to get a 64K model. There were models with anything from 8K to 64K RAM. MSX2 is more fun: usually more memory, more colours, slightly better graphics, more natural to use 3.5" disks. However MSX2 computers usually are more expensive, in particular those imported from Japan. If you want to get wild and crazy, go for a MSX2+ of which only...
