Does anyone know if these work as cache replacements? I simply cannot find any of the chips that are actually on the board.

IBM PS/2 P70 portable not POSTing
Published (2009-11-06 16:19:00)
The local computer nonprofit I help out at knows I love old machines and I identified a PS/2 model P70 that they were given. It powers on, but nothing on the screen and no POST either. I removed the NIC and the 4 memory chips and the CMOS battery, but still nothing. The keyboard lights flash when turning it on, but nothing else. Any other troubleshooting ideas? Hardly ever do I see a failed PS/2.

I have similar board, an Alaris Leopard 486SLC2 rev C. http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/motherbo...LC2-REV-C.html The CPU on it is IBM 486SLC2-66, not Cyrix or TI.

They look close enough. I wouldn't have thought that 32Kx8 high-speed SRAM shouldn't be too hard to locate. But maybe the "window" has passed? How about this one from Jameco? JDR's got some too, but they're about $6 the each.

Not perchance Free Geek in Portland, is it? If so, then I'm probably the one who donated it, and it's beyond reasonable repair. (Probably requires resoldering some parts.)

I think its time for me to buy an old 5.25 inch drive and a pack of ancient 1.2M disks.
I have a "new" PC that only boots from HDD and floppy, and if the HDD goes out, I need a reliable boot method. I went through a few bad disks trying to get a minimal cd-enabled dos 6.22 boot floppy to boot all the way without screaming 'sector not found.'
The disk that finally did work: an older-...

A 486/133 is 4x33 and I dont see a 4x clock setting on that board. If the pentium overdrive is used you might get 33x3, which is what you show as 100.
Cache jumper setting s are shown, check to see what you have.

if you could take some pictures it might help someone identify it.

Much of the "noise" you hear has to do with the matchup of the mechanical characteristics of the positioner with the rate of step pulses being issued by the controller. When the matchup is good, the drive is very quiet. When the controller issues step pulses that too slow, the operation is noisy. Too fast, and you get positioning errors, so one errs on the side of being too slow.

eek... well the first problem is that you're not using an ethernet card. get one! for 16-bit ISA, i prefer the 3Com 3C509-TPB.

I'd be a bit cautious overclocking if the board you are using is an older model. I think the early VLSI chipsets were not always happy about running out of spec, and often times you will see the maximum rated speed stamped onto their surfaces. Not to mention, older boards might not allow you to adjust dividers that control operating speed of ISA or DMA, or insert extra wait states for DRAM and ...
