Kaypro CP/M Software

The only way I could think of writing images was to download the image using PC, use Hyperterminal to transfer to Compaq Portable III (which has no 3½" floppy) and use its 5¼" floppy drive to write to disk. No matter what I did, the disk was not readable. I tried lots of different variations. I considered that maybe the Kaypro "New 2" drives were faulty, but I tested Kaypro II images for my Kaypro II...

Damn, I knew that the C128 had a Z80 built-in, but I thought that the actual CP/M itself was the same between them, or at least similar... so the C64 CP/M isn't compatible with... erm... anything? Edit: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooo it's true.. "The CP/M Cartridge, or Z-80 Cartridge as referenced in the Programmer's Reference, was manufactured in 1983 and was soon withdrawn, because it was slow, buggy and...

Kaypro 2 system disc

I too need a boot disk for a Kaypro "New 2". Can somebody help me with that? I tried many times to make a boot disk, writing Kaypro disk images with a Compaq Portable III, but none of them worked. (probably wrong drive speed/density or something) It's damn frustrating. I've got Kaypro II boot disks and software, but can't use them for my Kaypro "New 2". I'll pay if somebody can mail me...

According to one unreliable source, there is an article by Ward Christensen, page 150 of the November 1978 issue of BYTE. Of course, I don't have it. Could someone confirm? If true, could he copy this historical article? (Ward Christensen invented XMODEM. Without him, you would not read this.) Yours Sincerely, Mr. Emmanuel Roche, France

I think you're thinking of the Commodore 128 and its 1571 disk drive being compatible with the Kaypro and other CP/M disk formats. The C-64's implementation of CP/M via it's plug-in cartridge and standard 1541 disk drive is not Kaypro compatible.

Is sharkonwheels off shore again? I know he used to sell bootdisk images for lots of systems including the Kaypro, given I'm sure lots of folks here could replicate that deal.

Hope those help.

Have you tried a Kaypro 2X boot disk? AFAIK, the 2x and the New 2 were very close internally.

Interesting question, rjcroy.
Even though it would never be as fast as direct hand-optimized assembly code, a well written C compiler should definitely be able to generate code that easily beats the performance of interpreted BASIC code.
I'm sure there are decent C compilers out there for the Z80, since it is still commonly used in embedded systems.
Anyone care to shed more light ...

If you can write to already-formatted disks, then the most likely culprit is the INDEX/ signal from the drive not making it to the controller. The WRITE TRACK command of the WD17xx waits for an index pulse before it begins formatting; without said pulse, it will wait forever.
This should be pretty easy to run down with a logic proble.

That old beast has certainly seen a bit of life.
I can't help you much with the problem but it would be cool to have one of these. It was voted "Australian Computer of the Year" in 1982 (see http://www.classic-computers.org.nz/...s/issue2.2. htm )

I opened up the Kaypro, and attempted to remove a floppy drive, but the screws are in so tight, I couldn't get either to budge! The case screws were extremely tight as well, and I had to really watch that I didn't ruin the heads.
So, bottom line, the drives aren't going anywhere. This means I'll definitely have to get a 360K drive. This is okay though, as I've been wanting to make some 5....

I got the basic two-drive system moved into a box tonight and took a look at the source code for the Ampro hard disk utilities. I wanted to see if there was anything in the software that would cause the 88MB hard disk size limitation that Ampro calls out in their documentation.
At a quick look, I didn't see anything that should limit it to 88MB. It looks like the "Generic" or "Seagate" ...

You should get "The Programmer's CP/m Handbook" by Andy Johnson-Laird (1983). It usually goes for $15 lately on ebay or amazon. It has a lot of good info on building and bringing up a cp/m build for the first time, including a lot of debugging tips. I have a copy somewhere, will see if I can find it and see if the book has any hints on your problem.
