1930 Martin Guitars 000-45 - 000 Acoustic Guitar This is a treasure. A well preserved 1930 Martin 000-45, quite simply one of the most collectible Martin Guitars ever made. This pre war sweetheart embodies that Holy Grail tone all guitarist long for and all builders hold in esteem. Every note is alive and complete. This one plays like a new guitar and appears to be all original but for a pro refinish and belly bridge. We are honored to offer...

Ted, No, I didn't even bid. I am primarily focused on pre-war, small body Martins, Gibsons, and perhaps Larson guitars right now. I did like that guitar though and would really like to hear what it sounds like.

I come here to learn, and learn from this forum every day. I have no vested interest, hesitated to post when my viewpoint attracts personal attacks despite being the majority opinion, and only decided to speak of my personal experience playing these guitars when asked, since not many here can report from ongoing first hand experience with both fan braced Martins, and X-braced gut string Martins strung with a variety of string types. I've...

Brian, Too cool story about the shot guitar! I have a very small collection of 2 "Bad Boyfriend" Martins that were shot in their cases and had a double bass that was shot with a .22, probably on stage. Not all vintage guitars were kept in careful circumstances, though that's what we like to find at estate sales.

Your link didn't work for me. So here's another one. eBay Stetson. He's been asking $4,200 for it but the highest bid he's gotten was for $1,010. It's a ladder braced guitar, spruce over Brazilian. Chris

Thanks for starting this thread, Phil. Your question has been on my mind recently as well. I've noticed that the two 1928 Nicks currently at Gruhn have very different bridges. Did the early Nicks come with both of these originally? Looks very nice. Nothing wrong to report, except for the non-original bridge pins. Pricing seems spot on, or even a tiny bit conservative for such a clean one.
Those are tremendous guitars!

I've bought way too many guitars. Dealing with Christie, the head of sales, has always been a pure pleasure. She is beyond a straight shooter. She's a
good and fair person who really knows what she's doing. She's also rather funny ; )
I can't recommend Gruhn's enough.

Congratulations!?!? Tim, you've gotta tell us what you bought. And then post a few pictures even they're from Gruhn's website.

I bought one of these this year, and it's a wonderful sounding guitar. Looks awful, sounds great!
Not sure what distinguishes it from the L1s of the same period. John Thomas has I believe a '26 or '27 L-1 and it has exactly the same bridge on it
that my NL has.

The "50's" part is your clue.
Added/modified/over-sized pickguards were all the rage in the 50's in C & W circles.
Neil Young was often photographed w/ a vintage D- Something or other (herringbone, dots, CF Martin headstock logo) that clearly had worn a very large pickguard
for a number of years before Neil got it and put a regular one back on.

apitius,
Sorry, I'm not going to be much help here. I only track vintage Martins through 1944. After all, you have to stop somewhere. I did a Gbase search and only
came up with a 1958 Martin employee made 000-28S for $7500. I looked in my 2008 Vintage Guitar Price Guide. They list the 1958-59 models between $7500-$8500.
Models made between 1953-1958 are worth a $1000 more. Those made between ...

I would go back to 1925 and buy all of the IBM stock I could get my hands on.
41 splits later I would cash everything in when it was at it's peak in 1999, and use my imagination for the rest.

Larsons that old do it under stress.
Photos of the bracing would help, and would be very appreciated. But as far as I can tell from your description, that brace is original.

+1 what Lee said.
Put in on the vintage corner section. You'll get replies from vintage experts.Overall condition is good, but it needs a quite a major restoration work.Very
nice guitar,i like it too.I once had a beat up '51 00-18 that it was a simply great sounding little guitar. It was better than a mint '54 00-18 i played
last summer.Mine had very dark Sitka looking top.

Looks to me like the sunburst was mostly sanded off, and the top refinished. If the top is original finish... I've never seen the like. What do the back
and sides look like?

It's the original neck, but cut down significantly and reprofiled by Milt Owen to get to the 1 5/8" nut width of the Gretsch replacement fingerboard.
By the time I was living in the same house as the guitar in 1984-85, Tony Rice had had the barrel of the neck reprofiled a couple of times to very slim
dimensions in the area of the first 5 frets. On one occasion Joh Monteleone did it on a repair ...

well aside from placing it in a frame and putting it on a wall, I can't think of much use for that one. Ugly.
