Best way to buy a new Martin
Published (2009-12-03 22:57:24)
Hi Pinewind, You sound a lot like me in my quest. I actually ended up buying and selling quite a few guitars before I was able to settle on what I was looking for. Dreads have a much fuller sound then anything else in the Martin catalogue. Smaller guitar are less echoy and sweeter sounding. Forward shifted scalloped instruments sound more ethereal (more overtones) vs straight braced which is generally more fundamental in nature. Rosewood tone...

Sting's Martin
Published (2009-11-30 16:11:01)
He has more than one. There is a thread I started about his televised concert at Durham Cathedral. He and his guitarist play a variety of Martins, including what looks like a size 1 or 2 as well as an 0-18. This particular guitar pictured above is likely the latter. 0's look just like 00s and 000s, not the stretched out peanut shape of a size 2 or 2-1/4.

50's Martin's are great guitars. They are very desireable and sound great. I have a 1950 D-18, and it's a very strong guitar. Great tone and
volume.

the 40 part since it evident I don't know what I'm doing

Must not be too tiny a shop if they had Martins like that around. Surprised about your D-28 comments, but as you said Coke or Pepsi...whatever floats your
boat!
I was hoping the happy, Merry Xmas ending to your story was that your wife whipped out $$$ and said HONEY this is for you?? I know, I keep having that

I have a '68 D-21, with 1 11/16" neck; the Special has a 1 3/4" neck... other differences have already been mentioned. IF I were GASsing, this would be the model, especially after reading these favorable reviews.
Congrats to you, rforman15!

John,
I would look at an OM model. You will need to adjust to some wider string spacing. OM-21, OM-28V, OM-28 Marquis, or OM-21 Special. These are comfortable
guitars to play, both seated and standing.
If you would like a little more power, try the M (0000) models. M-38 or M-36. Same depth as the OM, but has the shape of a jumbo. Elderly has some nice
M's on their site. I do not ...

My question is why don't we hear more about this model?
My guess would be that it (they) are very high priced models with a limited field of fans. Not only is the 12 fret dread a poor cousin to the 14
fret dread (I'm speaking in general popularity and sales), but the even wider nut width on the Ditsons is a further drawback to mass appeal.
This obviously has nothing to do with how nice a...

Go play them and find out... each guitar is different (even the several GE's I've played have different sounds) and certainly an old D-18 with
straight bracing and sitka is going to be a different sounding animal altogether (and the several of them I've played range from awful sounding to very
sweet indeed!)

Probably buying through a reputable dealer is the best, particulalry if you are thinking custom. They can be the middle man and facilitate the interaction with
Martin. Plus, they will probably get you the best price. You can try local, but there are a couple very reputable dealers online that are very trusted by this

If it was me and I liked the guitar and the price was right then a cleanly repaired crack wouldn't stop me from buying it.
