Boiler breakdowns?

haha :-))) Well, it wasn't me! I was lucky in that Mike4 found me when I posted a plea for help on here one cold day. For the amount he charges, I call that complete peace of mind. I am not sure why someone said it was better to get a service done in Autumn - I can't see that it matters, bit like getting your car serviced - it is still done every 12 months. Also good to see you mentioned Gas Safe , for others that don't know,...

Ah, yes, very good point! He actually does get trimmed but only in summer, to get rid of the knots. I think trimming him to help keep me warm is a false economy somehow......the vet bill, the cost of the 'device', his counselling to get over it, he'd probably eat more to console himself.... :) Mel

Cold, what cold??

All my post was, was a jokey observation, a little light humour poking fun at myself. Unfortunately, it is difficult to intimate humour through a message board medium and so I took your post at face value and took the opportunity of starting off a discussion. Even though I'm not particularly keen on them, I guess the best way of ensuring that your post is meant to be 'tongue in cheek' is to add a little icon like this ;-)

Cast Iron Cookware at Aldi

I bought one of the alternative brands (Chasseur) and it's really not very good. I think it's a case of you get what you pay for. I finally splashed out on a Le Creuset casserole dish while there was 20% off in Debenhams. I hope it will last as long as me. I also bought a solid granite casserole dish on a car boot sale this year. It's fantastic for slow cooking. They are now my two favourite things in the kitchen

Loft insulation
Published (2009-12-24 08:32:00)
Just a quick tip - if you look at the roofs of the houses in the street, and yours has less snow on it than the average in your neighbourhood, then the chances are that your loft insulation is below par. Simple and obvious I know, but we don't get the opportunity so much these days. Scott.

Boiler breakdowns?
Published (2009-12-23 23:01:00)
Sats, there was a lady on Radio 5 this morning with a broken down boiler, she was saying, "it's not just me, it's the cat - it's an animal welfare issue!" Made me think of you! She clearly never correctly identified her cat as a replacement heating device. In answer to your question, I had my boiler/gas fire serviced this year but don't do it every year, I know I should but I don't seem to get around...

Oh dear! I am sorry to hear this, mrbruff! I thought you must be there by now. Is mrsbruff anything that might qualify? My brother did not have a job at all (he sold a business and sort of retired early) but he was able to go live in NZ with his wife because she was a physiotherapist. Could you apply again in a while? Perhaps they are a bit credit crunched at the moment and there will be jobs next year? Or are there other ways round it?...

Yes thats the one. Got a reasonable write up in Which Its fitted by a very simple clip around the supply cable. Must be some form of magnetic induction.Seems pretty accurate. Theres then a few feet of wire to a transmitter. Remote receiver seems to work anywhere in the house. S

Dishwashers (compact)

"FWIW JL appear to have some compact Bosch ones too." Thanks. I just looked again on their website, and I think the first time I'd missed the button that let's me select 'compact', so didn't spot the others. The one at ?250 looked promising until I read that it doesn't include a door! That's an extra. - venice2001.

Dishwashers (compact)

Mind you I wouldn't mind a putter awayer machine if anyone knows of one of those :) The trick here is to get two dishwashers, one has the dirty dishes in waiting to be washed, the other has the washed ones , ready to be used, you just use the clean ones and restock the dirty ones, no need to put away as the clean dishwasher is effectively your cupboard

20 cartons of UHT milk YEEEUUUCH! Are we forcing debtors to drink that now? Bring back debtors prison! or birching. Far more humane. Nige ;o) PS. Incase you haven't guessed, I hate UHT milk. It not only tastes disgusting, it sticks to your throat for about 6 hours afterwards.

So, do you Fools have your boiler serviced regularly, and who would you call if it broke down today? Great question! Our boiler is probably ~20 years old and only has about 4 different parts to it. We had it serviced this year but probably won't get it serviced every year (maybe every other year or so). If it breaks down, I'll call out the plumber/heating engineer who is based about...

This is a brilliant tip, and one my husband and I have used for years- our wasteful neightbour had no insulation and he never had any snow on his roof. Well done for drawing attention to this. Merry Christmas, ho! Ho!, Ho!

Excellent news. Anytime I call my GP I get annoyed at having to spend money to listen to the Direktiv being snarled at me on the message before I even get to speak to anyone. Why they can't just have a number for appts and a number of other (as that is the only content of the messsage) is beyond me anyway.

small word of warning - the casserole dish is great, but the handle broke off the one we bought from Aldi around 18 months ago (looks like exactly the same model) - just shattered in the oven! So now we have a casserole dish with a built in vent :-) Ten x

There may be an efficiency for the gas combustion that I may have overlooked. I'm assuming 100% efficiency for gas and electricity. When heating with gas a large amount of the heat will be lost up round the sides of the pot or kettle. An electric kettle is much more efficient at directing the heat to the water. It wouldn't surprise me if it made the difference between the 5p and the ...

Perhaps you need to ask yourself just why you are putting yourself through all this? Is there some kind of perverse pleasure in being at one with the elements? Are you really so hard up that you cannot afford heating? Is heating lower on your priorities than paying off debts (or saving)? And if you are saving, what are you saving for - so that you are better off in your old age (...

It means that each of the "xxxx" on sale has been reduced by some amount between 0% and 50%. Technically, reducing everything by 0% would meet the description. It actually means the opposite of what it appears to - with no sign, the items could be anywhere betweeen full price and 100% off, with the sign you know that nothing has more than 50% off.
