Yeah, it's a good scene. I like how it's played slowly...

Well, there are only two possibilities for the Enterprise to get involved in a mission. Either they discover the threat by themselves, or they are the only ship in range. The latter is only an unneccessary justification why Starfleet tells them: "Go, fetch." You don't complain about crime novels, where the cop gets the case because he stumbled over it or is simply assigned to it without further questions being asked....

At the end, its a cheap "omigod" when only the Enterprise can do something. I don't buy it, but okay. No better than "with our primary fleet engaged in the Laurentian system" in terms of plot. I'd actually prefer the alternative. f Starfleet had seriously engaged with V'ger, the effort probably would have ended like the Klingon/Epsilon encounters. That would have greatly raised the stakes for...

Probably better off in the Trek XI forum.

Klingon Bird-of-Prey in Star Trek's III and IV
Has anyone else noticed that the Bird-of-Prey that Kirk & Co. use has two COMPLETELY different bridge layouts?
They look like two different ships.
I just watched The Search for Spock and realized it.

I think GQ works as well as it does because we can relate to all the jokes
it's a parody of Star Trek and its fans while being respectful, and in the end it's sort of a celebration of the whole sci-fi fandom thing . . .

McCoy: "Whoa, plomeek! I'll take the next one."
Picard: "You there, young man, what day is it?"
Boy (off camera): "Why, it's Christmas morning, suh."
Picard: "Then fetch me the largest turkey you can find. And some wine. And a big screen TV."

Re: 1968 TREK movie?
I wonder if GR had any early story ideas for it? I wonder if his son has any info. Not really a big deal, but I had never heard of it until recently.

I prefer the theatrical cut. It moses quickly and none of the missing scenes are - actually - missed. By me. Their loss does the film no harm at all.
The original video version adds the cheesy "Scooby-Doo" ending with the Klingon unmasking, which makes absolutely no sense at all (why put a starfleet guy in a rubber mask, sit him with the Klingons, then have him get up and walk to his ...

I personally find the Director's Edition to be a stronger film. It's Robert Wise's preferred cut of the film, and the one he wanted to release back in Dec. of '79.
So I think you guys should go back and review that one!
And for the record, I've always liked TMP....

Now, I'm not one to focus on things I dislike all that much, but I thought it was only fair since we have a thread dedicated to what we thought was the best Trek visual effect.
Granted, I know people will be going on and on about the FX in V and/or Insurrection and rightfully so. However, I do hope that some will at least try to name some from the others since all the movie have at least ...
