You seem to confuse the sign of cost here. Without a national military, Tellarites would end up paying less for their protection - and that alone might be incentive enough to join the UFP. There are no doubt thousands of other incentives...

I've heard a VERY cool version of the TOS theme on Michael Feldman's "What Do You Know" show on Public Radio. John Thulin leads the band, plays piano and did the arrangement.

Ah, good topic. This requires some thought.
I was tempted to go with Trip, but I watched Cogenitor the other day, which makes me more sympathetic to him. I think you may have a point with Janeway. As much as i like Janeway and think Mulgrew's acting was great, I can see your point.
Probably Travis Mayweather then. Or Wesley. Or Troi.

Star Trek Exhibit: San Jose, CA
I've been considering this and was thinking of going either today or tomorrow, but haven't seen much feedback on it so far. Anyone go to the San Jose one yet? Is it worth the $25? I love Trek, but $25 is a bit steep these days.

I wasn't sure whether to post this in the DS9 subforum or here, but I decided to post it here because it concerns the politics of Federation and Star Trek in general.
In DS9, we found out that one of the Federation ships used in the Dominion War was called USS Cortez . If there is any doubt if this is really a reference to the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes, there is also another ship...

The idea of this game is that each character has a number of points (Each starts with 10), and posters distract points from characters they didn't like, and add points to characters they like. When a character has 0 or less points left, they are removed from the game, and this goes on until only one is left, who will be our collective favourite Trek character.
THE RULES:
When you post, you ...

The alternatives as of ST6 seem to be to ally, or to engage in a war with. In the latter case, the alternatives seem to be to fight to a standstill, or to be enslaved by the Klingons. Sounds like simple enough a choice...
I can't think of a single example where the Federation would have fought to free a foreign culture. Indeed, doesn't the Prime Directive say that this would be a big no-no? ...

Re: Is Star Trek Communist?
While I never really got that vibe from TOS, TNG represents a certain 'utopian communistic ideal' made possible through the miracle of replication.
You also have to keep in mind that TNG did consider individual rights well below the worth of the 'group'. You wouldn't see dissent on the bridge - that...

Are There Pet Dogs In The Future?
Early on in TNG Star Trek seemed to want to promote a more a more PETA inspired philosophy towards animals, but that eventually gave way. We even got to see Data own a cat and Geordi mentioned his sister had a cat, but other then Archer did we ever see or have somebody say they had a pet dog?...

Re: I hate it when they just throw things in there
We don't even know if it was Spock's wedding. He just said "at his son's wedding", and I think I read somewhere that one of the writers was asked about it and he just facetiously commented "How do you know if Sarek doesn't have another son?" In any case, whether Spock got married, ...
