TOS had the best characters. Its the only Star Trek series I've watched. The actors in this Star Trek reboot did a splendid job of giving life to the characters we so dearly enjoyed in TOS. Like danoyse said the actors gave respectful performances that didn't take away anything from the original cast but instead gave us a sound reminder on how great of a job the actors before them did to create these characters. Not only that but...

if this new iteration of Star Trek offends some people so....you do have DVDs of all 3 seasons of the original series, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise....not to mention ten films....its not like all that stuff has disappeared, you can enjoy it over and over and over and ignore the new direction the franchise is going out of some misguided principle
