H is the old Nikkor lens letter code for "six" as in six elements. The C stands for coated,as in multi-coated. The lens you have for sale is actually a pretty decent 50mm f/2 lens.
Addendum: for those who like to check serial numbers and vintages, this lens was produced between 1972 and 1974.

That will be a tough one. I would highly recommend trying to sell it then use the money to buy a d300. You will get a d300 a lot quicker if you sell then buy. I cant see to many people wanting to trade down. Hope for the best.

Save your money for a good polarizer instead!
A UV can't improve a digital image. It adds an air gap and extra glass promoting flare and the possibility of diminished contrast, depending on the quality of the filter.
If it's lens protection you're after just keep the lens cap on till you're ready to use the lens, and then use the lens hood. A lens hood improves contrast and minimizes lens...
