In practice I will still come back to the kind of photography matters. An 85mm f/1.2 will take a photo such that the eyes are in focus, but the nose and ears are a blur. Focus and recompose if you must, but there are electrical aids for this in many cameras

I think that would be helpful if you are in a single point focus situation. You would still get the...

I am probably off here but getting the camera parallel to the wall upon which the painting is hung is just a matter of using a tape measure, some painters tape for the floor (parallel to the wall to use as a reference to sight in the camera back) and a level. After that the tape measure is used to determine the angle the painting is hanging, which could then be offset by the t/s lens. Harder to describe than to do. If you only have a few to do...

I agree, it sounds like the on-camera flash is firing a pre-flash, which triggers the strobes prematurely. If you can set your flash to manual, that should fix it...but I agree that not using it at all, is a better option. Either use a cord or a wireless radio trigger. This is actually a fairly common mistake for strobe virgins.

From portraits to jewerly?...
Published (2009-12-28 11:06:00)
Hi All, Just wondering if I can get feedback on few of these. My background is more of wedding/portraits/event photography but recently I was approach to shoot some stuff for a jeweler. Product photography is a bit different then what I normally do thus prior to take on the assignment, I thought to get a little practice . Camera : Nikon d90 mounted with Nikon 28-105 3.5-4.5 D IF AF (macro 50-105) Exposure : ISO 200, 1/200sec, f/8, WB : costume...

Multiple autofocusing points allow the camera to accept and input data from *multiple points* across the frame. If you have a Nikon body with the Scene Recognition System, that system uses color information ( RGB color analysis) and distance information to "identify" the original subject and to follow that subject as it moves across the frame, it would be a good idea to learn how to use a grouped ...

I know how to light it,
You'll need a ringlight around the camera axis, not necessarily on it, two umbrellas about 45 degrees, two more umbrellas 45 degrees behind the subject, or have the kickers bare, and a background light, but that part can be done in post if you shoot on a green screen.
Than hire whoever does her post-production.

To me, in #2 the shine off of the jewelery helps it jump out where you used the gray card as a background. I think I like #2 the best. Did the jeweler decide the positioning for the rings? #3 is a little difficult to differentiate the 3 different rings and the shadow created by the diamond looks too harsh.
Edit: I just saw that this was practice for the real shoot. Keep in mind that you ...

I actually found the perfect solution for the same problem. I actually purchased ankle weights from target. I use 3 ten pound weights. They are black so they don't look obtrusive. They have velcro so I attach a ten pound weight to each tripod leg which gives incredible stability. Plus you can purchase more if you need and just attached them as necessary. It works great for me.

I watermark purely because Picasa 3.0 has it as an optional tick box. It just adds a small personal touch to my photos I think.
Occasionally it gets in the way of the details in which case I have to re-export the image with no watermark.

... Don't you have a viewfinder to use to line up the image? If it's slightly off then you can always tweak it slightly in post without any noticeable difference.
