I imagine they live a very long time but are not immortal. I imagine with enough time, even their "cells" start to lose their ability to repair or
regenerate. I have nothing to back this up, but it was the feeling I got from watching DS9

No, Orion is not a Federation member in that episode (or at all, I think) and I would have to rewatch the episode to see of it gave any clues about Bilby's reasons for becoming part of the Syndicate.
Wasn't there something to do with being offered money?
Anyway,
DS9 made it clear that while Earth could be construed as a Utopia, the galaxy as a whole certainly was not. There could be a ...

It's hard to speculate how much of what eventually happened on DS9 with it's
character relationships if one element was replaced by an already known character - Laren etc.
I just tend to look at it as one of those fortunate happenstances that she was unwilling to commit to a series and we got Nana Visitor and Kira instead!

DS9 was almost like a soap opera, this is great in that you can develop more complex storylines and characters and meant it could do justice to the full extent of the war, Dukats
descent into madness, the romantic relationships etc. But as a casual viewer watching it on-off it can be very confusing and some people don't want to follow a show week in week out, preferring to watch the odd one when ...
