Exelon Corp. (EXC)

Exelon Corporation (EXC) Exelon Corporation operates 17 nuclear power plants. There are several advantages to nuclear power over other methods of generating electricity. Number one: it's cheaper—once the plants are built and up and running. It's also much less polluting and, looking forward, to quote Value Line: "Exelon's nuclear plants will become even more valuable if climate change legislation is enacted that would...

Footnotes contain more obvious (to mathematicians) jokes, such as one that comments: Just as liberal feminists are frequently content with a minimal agenda of legal and social equality for women and 'pro-choice', so liberal (and even some socialist) mathematicians are often content to work within the hegemonic Zermelo-Fraenkel framework (which, reflecting its nineteenth-century liberal origins, already incorporates the axiom of...

Hi hoosier, when they took the NOL write down at the end of the year I thought it was about $5-$6/shr., $2/shr sounds way to low, where did you get that number from? Alex Scherer (aka TMFEnochRoot) sent me an email after my latest coverage post on the Stock Advisor board. I was adding the full value of the NOLs to the book value, and he cautioned me against double-counting. Here's his explanation: When NOL's have been written off...

But a yield of 2.1%, which is likely to be chopped down to 1.785% if held in a IRA, shouldn't be a deciding factor to the exclusion of the value and potential gains of the equity that produces those dividends. Agreed. Mike

An example always helps. US tax rate 15%, foreign tax rate 20%, dividend amount $100 In taxable account: you will pay $20 to foreign govt you will get a net credit of $5 from US ( $15 - $20 credit) your net tax paid is $15. In non-taxable account: you will pay $20 to foreign govt. you owe $0 to US and forgo the credit. your net tax paid is $20. So in non-taxable account you pay $5 more in tax. If US and foreign tax rates are both 15%, you may...

North American Galvanizing

After looking at the Value Line report on NGA I had the same question as Kelbon. Results in recent years (e.g. revenue trends, NPM, cash flow etc.) are strikingly better than prior years. Is this change sustainable? Looking at the 10-K filings I note: "2005 COMPARED TO 2004 SALES---Sales for the year ended December 31, 2005 increased 34% over the prior year due primarily to contribution from the Canton, Ohio galvanizing facility that...

While the past is in many ways irrelevant and the present and future all important, if you took a look at NGA in the years prior to the ones that KitKat addresses, it looked like a very different company. For instance: Revenues per share 1999: $4.47 Revenues per share 2003: $2.45 Earnings per share 1999: $0.08 Earnings per share 2003: $-0.07 Return on Equity 1999: 4.3% Return on Equity ...

Want to invest in a conservative basket of Euro zone equities? Buy Euro Equity Fund and you get a 15% discount on them, and a 2.1% dividend. If you do buy a high dividend-yielding foreign equity fund or stock try and avoid holding it in a tax-advantaged retirement account. The foreign tax withholding will cut into the dividend and you won't be able to make it back with a "foreign tax ...

Thanks joe--excellent intro I am looking at the list of subsidiaries and getting a little light-headed. There are some sectors here that would appear to be big winners going forward and if can be picked up on the cheap now might make for a reasonably good investment * Natural gas drilling and energy exploration * Timber * Copper and iron ore mining * Real estate * Plastic manufacturing * ...

hi Rich I like this company and also think they have some staying power. They have been around for awhile and beaten the odds. First passed this price point about 5 years ago and I would guess are a lot better company now than then. Am more familiar with them on a personal level since they are a local company that made good. Lots of strange sock splits March 2002 4 for 3 Feb 2004 3 for 2 ...

thanks Elliot Just a quick look at some of the numbers and they look like a well-run company. In spite of the slowdown, the LTM looks good. Returns and margins are holding. They have cash and low debt and positive CFFO. The only thing I can't tell is whet will start them back on the path to growth. Price pre share really took off in 2006 with revenue going from $48 million to $74 million ...

Hi joe Can't thank you enough for dissecting Leucadia. With your posts to use in conjunction with the SEC docs, it becomes a lot clearer how the company operates. When I looked at them in 2007 they looked like a gigantic ball of yarn that had been unraveled by a herd of manic cats. So thanks First 9 months 2009 actually looks good Income related to associated companies is $867.2 million ...
