QUOTE (roofless @ Nov 11 2009, 07:53 PM) what primer you working with to get a good start point prior to colour? is this question aimed at me? Ill be applying black primer, before I apply the black undercoat, then just a fine layer of pearl purple as I want the colour to be dominantly black but with a purple hint. 1 to 2 layers of purple.

Doesnt sound too bad, as long as you have the skills to apply it. Remember that preparation is key to getting a good finish.

RAL is a european colour standard - IE RAL 7025 is the same dark grey anywhere. It's an industry standard, so you can get RAL 7025 2k, celly, enamel and even powder coat, and they will all be very close to the same colour. Aim for a primer that is similar in colour to the topcoat, but don't go mad. 2k covers pretty well, so the main thing is to just get all the primer the same colour, and nice and flat. If I was faced with a mini in...

Cheers Jonez, a lot of the information online talks about "mineral spirits" which basically applies to any thinner that works with oil based paints if i have it correct? White spirit is easily obtained which is a good thing in my case!

No Lacuqer is needed with cellulose paints, just a good colour sanding and polish. to paint a mini i generally get 2.5 litres of celly paint and 5 litres of topcoat thinners, standard thinners wont give the deep shine. mix the paint1:1 (the extra thinners are needed to clean out the gun) If i plan to keep the car i will pay a little extra and get 5 litres of paint for future use if needed...

Id use proper thinners. Its not that expensive. 5L of basic thinner is about £11 at our local paint shop. The better stuff is about £18-20. Jordie

I was on a fairly major historic rally in Wales about 12 years ago and at a petrol station in the middle of the night a local plod came and told me that my stick-on bomnnet number plate, a black and white one on a '64 car was illegal. I told him that it had been put on my my fellow Mini enthusiast who happened to be an Inspector in the met, but that if he had any issus I would get my ...

Various sellers on ebay sell "2k safe" respirator masks. These are not air fed. I have sprayed a few times with one and am still not dead. Bear in mind that 2k is unlikely to kill you straight off, but the effects are cumulative - the more you use it, the more you risk illness. The choice is yours alone.

Personally, I regard that part of the bulkhead as structural, but if you want to make an enormous airbox (or Weber box as we call them) & it's welded in properly, you shouldn't be compromising the structure. All the Miglias I've seen have the normal ' battery box' style of Weber box, but it's possible some have larger ones. It's a few years since I've been involved with them. It might be a ...
