Hi, I just read in SA online manual that they recommend NOT using +P ammo in any of their guns with less than a 5" Barrel. I thought that as long as the frame was steel there shouldn't be a problem. I can't see a problem with a commander size all steel, but I was hoping I could use +P in a 3" all steel frame. Opinions?

OK. I was just about set on a Les Baer when I saw the Knighthawk Custom Dominator. It has every little feature I was looking for and comes in slightly cheaper then all the others (even before my military discount). I think its the winner unless anyone tells me otherwise.

I haven't owned either of the three you listed so take this with a HUGE grain of salt. Of those listed, I would choose the STI. For the price you listed, you might also look into a Fusion custom at www.fusionfirearms.com . If you want to go with a slightly smaller pistol, look at the Springfield EMP.

Not a 1911, but virtually same platform and fills all your other requirements, plus well under $1000 new - Browning Hi-Power. In Hard Chrome ~

All excellent suggestions - thanks. I'm new to this forum, so I hadn't heard of Fusion. I shot an email off to them, and am also looking harder at the High Power and EMP. The Fusion looks very interesting, especially since I'd like to have three to four 9mm's and three to four .45's (for the girls and the boys, respectively, in the family) - I could end up with a nice, consistent, lineup of handguns for the team. One...

Although I love my Colt Special Combat Gov. which set me back $1,400. My favorite 45ACP lead launcher is not a 1911 exactly. It is a S&W 945 from their Performance Center. Mine cost me about $1,800 years ago. Both of these are what I call 50 yard guns. At 25 yards they will make one big 45 cal hole from a rest. Now the S&W Performance Center makes a 1911. I would love one but am saving my pennies for a 952. I guess if I had a...

I really like my Colt Defender. I Shoot it much better than my glock 23. Lightweight, compact and .45acp. Perfect for summer carry IMO. I haven't fired any of the Cold weather pistols. So I'll let the other guys chime in about them.

Definitely call John. Any other way of purchasing a new LB isn't the equal.
The grip safety on a Colt SCG is a S&A, you can get those with or without the speed bump. You'll need to send it out for hard chrome after fitting it to the trigger stirrup.
I have a couple of the SCG in 45 and while they are superb 1911's, they are not going to shoot like a LB. I have some of some also and have shot...

Your Remington Rand was made in early 1945. Remington Rand started producing 45 pistols in late 1942 and by the end of the war in 1945 they made 877,751 pistols which was more than any other contractor. They also became the best quality and least expensive .45 pistol out of all of the five contractors. If your pistol is indeed all correct and as nice as you say it could be worth $1500 to $1800...

One: follow what the manual says.
Two: the smaller the slide on these guns, the more exasserbated the effects of recoil on the firearm itself ( wear and tear) from shorter distance of travel. +p rounds = more recoil than standard rounds.
Three: powder requires room to burn inside the barrel, creating pressure which increases velocity of the projectile... The point of +p... Shorter barrels ...

Just a suggestion, but for a lot less than the Wilson, Springfield Pro or the Colt SCG, maybe this model - You get a quality Colt 1911 with a rail to add a light or laser for your tactical advantage for around $1000. Then use the extra money you were going to spend on accessories, ammo and range time.
I'm sure you will get lots more suggestions.....
