If it were me I would go for the new Colt, and get the warranty. That way the day you buy your pistol you can enjoy it. Don't be so sure it will need a trigger job out of the box.
The project gun could be something down the road as you search for the perfect pistol to have built and no worry about the wait.

I'm looking to buy a used Colt 1911A1 that the owner doesn't know much about. So I figured I'd start by looking up the serial number. I've read all of the normal locations for
serial numbers ( www.proofhouse.com , www.coolgunsite.com ) But I still can't find any info for this Colt. The number that the seller posted is: 27785** Colt A1. Basically that's 2.77 million.

The lightweight commander is currently manufactured only as an XSE which does have an ambidextrous but also front cocking serrations. It is available in both .45 ACP and Super.38, and as a TALO "Ghost Commander" in .45 ACP.

Also, you can get the Combat Commander (not
light weight) in the 1991 model without the front serrations or ambidextrous...

Unless there are safety issues that existed from new, I doubt Colt will work on them for free. It depends on the nature of the "work" that's been done, but if you paid someone to fix them and they still don't work, you should take it up with them, rather than Colt.
