Sharp edeges on defender
Published (2009-11-07 00:03:00)
The sharp edges must be a result of the new Colt machinery. I have a Defender I bought in 2003 and you definitely can't shave with it and it has not damaged any holsters. The edges aren't "melted" but they are not sharp.

The M1911 Pistols Organization...

I have an M1991A1 Compact that's probably ten years older than your 2003. I wouldn't say you could shave on the bottom edges of the slide, but you could get a wicked cut if you slide your hand along them. It's not a function of the new machinery, it's just the way Colt builds 'em.

I've bought a few new Colt's recently, I'll try to get pics of all together soon. I love this one ~

Seems to me most any deal that ends with a colt is a good deal...

A problem I have never seen on...
Published (2009-11-06 22:46:00)
I take it this was a new pistol, not used, and it's an XSE model. If so, the Lightweight Commander isn't part of the recall, but given the duckbill grip safety on the XSE is a cast part, it's not entirely surprising that it failed. I had one fresh from the factory with extremely obvious flaws in the grip safety, and Colt quickly replaced it. I was fortunate in that mine showed up in the exterior--it just as easily could have...

New to 1911's-GCNM slide...
Published (2009-11-07 09:31:00)
The link pins in some of my GCNM will fall out very easily and even when the guns are practically new. I wouldn't worry much about the slide to frame fit. Welcome to the forum.

It would seem that Colt would have withdrawn all those slides which are machined in that way. The issue is known for quite some time now.
Nice pair you got there, congrats!

Thanks. The Ed Brown beavertail would look good I bet. I just may have to find out.

Hello,
I think that is fair deal for both pistols considering that they are all original.
BTW, barrel to slide lockup accounts for 80% of a pistol's accuracy with the frame/slide accounting for only 15%. All of my Colts are loosey-goosey but shoot great.
It sounds like the GCNM lug peen or link loading may have eggshaped the SS pin hole in frame. There are oversized SS pins ...

Had the same problem with my defender. I use a large stone w/oil to smooth the edges. You can't tell by looking that anything was done to it, but edges are smooth to the holster... and my fingers! I've done this to most of my 1911's when they were new. Don't ever use a file!

It's unusual, I haven't heard of that before but it shouldn't be too difficult for Colt to fix.
I'm sure Colt will take proper care of it.

If the pistol is rust free and functional, that isn't a bad price. I paid $600 for an unmodified CC of the same vintage. Its an even better price if the pistol hasn't been modified from its original configuration.
Combat Commanders in decent shape and unmodified typically list and sell on gunbroker.com from $6-->$700.

I usually wipe my off with an oily rag after cleaning. In my case the oil is Breakfree or something similar. I also live in the SW USA, so high humidity is not an issue.

I have a "pre-80 Series" nickle CC that I paid $600 for. It was absolutely stock when I purchased it and proceeded to put signficant $$ into it--finish bead blast, sights, trigger job, grip safety, faux grips, long trigger. Its a great shooter and not that bad looking but I'd estimate its current value at $600 to the right buyer.
An unmodified p-80 nickle CC in pristine condition with box...
