California fruiting papaya
Published (2009-11-28 17:52:00)
Hi Sandra, Thank you. I bought the papaya as a two foot tall plant from Laguna Hills Nursery two springs ago (about a year and a half ago). I actually worked at a papaya packing plant in Hilo years ago so I guess I got spoiled by the taste of Hawaiian papaya. It was funny that the tastiest, tree ripened papaya fruit was thrown away because they had no shelf life. We could have all we wanted for free.

Thanks, Chris! I think the mites are the problem. Finding an effective miticide that's not illegal is a slight problem here in the USA. Sorry, ton2menehune, I've only recently joined the 21 st century, and I'm still fumbling with my digital camera and the procedures for including images in my posts. Hope to figure it out soon, but in the meantime, I'm fumbling with verbal descriptions. The actual tissue of the leaf is...

Medinilla seeds
Published (2009-11-26 21:08:00)
Gary, I am referring to the Med magnifica. I also threw some coconut husk into the mix. Let me know how it does epiphytically for you. I've also read that that's how it grows. I've have killed every species of Medinilla so far. :( Oddly, they all died after blooming. So I am keeping my fingers crossed on this mix. I also have miniata in the same mix and it is doing fine.

Hi Take it you don't have the papaya fly there?? They grow very easily here but you get maybe one fruit out of ten. Nothing as wonderful as slicing a fruit open and it's crawling with maggots lol my birds LOVE them though lol gary

Hello Gardeners! I wanted to let you all know about CAPTAIN BANANA, a new documentary film about bananas... Centered on the life and tropical expeditions of former sea captain and self-taught botanist, Markku H?kkinen, CAPTAIN BANANA celebrates the personal, cultural and environmental significance of bananas. Taking the viewer on a unique journey to Southeast Asian banana festivals, a banana expedition in the mountain forests of China and to...

Looks ok. paw paws as we call papaya in Australia use to do well in Sydney which is zone 10. They use to say either you got no fruit or enough to feed the street. The one you have illustrated looks like a bisexual paw paw as the fruit are on the ends of long storks. Normally the female plant produces the fruit but needs a male plant nearby. The fruit on a female paw paw is held close to the trunk.

Hi Gary, That's a nice looking plant you have! How long did it take for it to get this big? I'm also in So. CAL and growing a few varieties of papayas (Mexican, Hawaiian Solo and Hawaiian Strawberry papayas) that I grew from seeds. Some are about 2 to 3' tall. I hope they turn out better than your other ones. :) Good job! Sandra

Ceiba pentandra?
Published (2009-11-28 16:01:00)
Hello, I am from Puerto Rico, the tree you are talking about is one on the native trees from Puerto Rico (Ceiba) the tree in the picture in the park must be over 300 hundred years old maybe 500? if your zone is a tropical area you should have no problem full sun is fine no need to be watering every day. If you will like it to grow it fast put it in a big pot, full sun and super-thrive fertilizer every two weeks or once a month. If you plant it...

are the bumps are on the plant or part of the plant? If it is on the plant,it is hard body scales. If it's part of plant,it might be internally . I wish could see the damage.

Ceiba's are the national tree here in Guatemala. They seem to grow really large in the very hot, tropical coastal areas, and in the jungles of the mayan ruins of Tikal. Here in the highlands, they grow slower. There are a few 6 or 7 footers in a field near me, very thorny trunks when young. They grow in full sun, with no particular care. Here in Antigua it is about 75 degrees year round, a bit ...

I love travelers palms. There blooms are very nice (similar to birds of paradise, but not colorful), but the leaves make everyone notice them! Good luck.

All forms of this plant can get big if the climate doesn't freeze it back each year. It will take multiple years of no freezes in winter to allow it to get 5 feet tall. It also tends to be somewhat brittle in winds, so that will also tend to keep it dwarfer. It is easily tip pinched to control size, and outdoors it is pretty easy to keep this in the 3 foot height range indefinitely. The ...

My Medinilla lives in the garden all year and is in flower now. It sets seed every year. The seeds are a purple color about 3/16 inch dia. When they are ripe they shrivel and fall to the ground. I have never tried to germinate these seeds so I have no idea how viable they are. The seed bunch looks like a small bunch of grapes. I hope this helps. Regards, John Driscoll
