My myrmecodia tuberosa is rotting! I have put a fan on top of the terrarium to increase airflow and put a small pillbug/ rolliepollie( you probably know what Im talking about)in the entrance hole of the plant in the hopes that it would eat the rotting matter and fertalize the plant... I have also deacreased watering...but it is still rotting. Please Help!

Orchids in apothocary jars
Published (2008-11-17 11:15:00)
Hi, I'm new here. I have tried to grow orchids indoors with little luck. Nov. issue of Real Simple has an article on growing single orchids in large apothocary jars. Do you think this is possible? If so are the any smaller orchids you could recommend to me? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. Andee

Thanks for the complement! An awful lot of research and thought went into it before construction even started. Once I got goin', it was easy. Although I haven't taken any recent photos, I do have many uploaded at Flickr. He's a link directly to the set. Scott Here is a link that might be useful: My paludarium photos

Hi. I've been looking at the gallery and images of orchids in terrariums and it seems that most people keep their orchids potted. Does anyone here actually plant their orchids into the terrarium landscape? Is there a reason not to? I want to grow ferns, mosses and paphs and create a little landscape with them not just stack plants in a "miniature greenhouse". I've started assembling the ...

Maybe someone can give me some tips on why my plants are currently dying. I constructed a small terrarium out of a 3 gallon aquarium. My drainage layers are composed of a layer of aquarium gravel, topped with activated carbon, then a layer of reindeer moss and finally, soil amended with sand for more drainage. Plants are a young hypoestes and small variageted ivy. Once planted, I topped the ...

Hello, this is my first post here. I have 2 successful terrariums going now, thanks in part to a lot of the posts I read on here before getting started. I have a few questions about plants I can use in a terrarium with a waterfall. I wish I could post pictures, but I don't have a camera on hand, so I'll do my best to explain. It's a 12x12x18 exo terra glass terrarium. I built a waterfall in...

Hi All. I'm looking for suggestions...I'm starting a terrarium and I want to get a short, mossy ground cover for it. I'm having trouble finding a good match. From some posts I've read, selaginella & sagina like cooler temperatures, and I'm aiming for 70-80 temp with humidity around 70%. Can anyone recommend a moss that would do well in these conditions?

I'm new to the terrarium thing and I've been reading I should use a layer of activated charcoal to reduce smells, and a layer of sphagnum moss to keep the soil from falling into the drainage layer. The problem is, I can't seem to find sphagnum moss or activated charcoal at Home Depot or my local garden center? Where do you find these things? Are they in the gardening section or somewhere else...

I posted some photos of this beautiful plant, Bertolonia marmorata, in the gallery (link below). It's the rock star of my terrariums. Being reflective with all that silver, it's more dramatic even than large variegated episcias (especially if you're not a big fan of lots of floofy pink stuff). I've had these for a few years now, obtained as seedlings from a local woman; I don't remember where...

I do know of some plants that are truly miniature, mostly orchids. But there are many others that are currently outside my database. While many of the terrarium plants stores sell plants that are called miniatures, most of those plants are NOT! If you know of any or have a favorite please share! One of my favorite non-orchid miniature plants is: Fittonia verschaffeltii click to see

I'll make a discussion thread to talk about them. I guess "Terrariums" is a good place to put this, since I always grow them in bowls or aquariums. Please notice the beauty of the plant, and ignore the scruffy look of the utility terrarium here! This tank was just a propagation terrarium that got left alone too long. You can see from all the yellow and brown leaves it got a bit neglected....
