TCLynx, where can I get a good heavy barrel in Port Saint Lucie? Gary, do you have pictures? I would like to see your setup. It is hard to visualize.

Shar Ditto what Susannah said, the first thing is to raise them up, to get access to all the water. I got mine expensive but Willy is not handy and neither I am :o) When my neighbors came to see the garden and saw the rain barrels, they all want it. lol. However they are very handy and bought the plain barrels for a fraction of the cost that we paid. Made the adjustments necessary and even paint them the color of their house! We have 2 barrels...

We're going to pick up the puppy, Atticus, tomorrow. I'm so excited! A Great Dane whose dad is a mere 185 pounds and whose mother is a slight 150 pounds. We picked out Atticus a few weeks ago. Actually he picked us after we played with the litter for awhile. He was the one who separated from the group to come follow us around. And he's been raised with cats and children and lots of other dogs around, including his mom and dad,...

Hi Certainly would be worth a shot?? My wife bought one of those upside down systems so am trying that this year. My bathtub that I usually use is over run with stevia lol Every year I say I will NOT grow tomatoes next year and every year I break down lol. Only one this year so I'm getting close lol. I chose a bush ,red cluster type . Has 5 fruits on it about tennis ball size . Got all the usual problems that this is supposed to prevent...

Tomatoes - am I doing it well?
Published (2009-11-21 22:49:00)
Hello again. sorry to hear about the years of no luck. I know it is a pain. please let me know what problems you have been having. I can help fix that for you. By the way, have you ever had your soil tested? do you know the Ph level? I believe soils in that area are way to high for tomatoes and if you are not adding any compost (which helps lower the Ph) then it may be as simple as that. Serioulsy, it may be that simple. I have seen a lot of...

ficus elastica (rubber tree)

You can control it by root pruning and top-cutting, but it's a bit of work. Our lot is just over 1/4 of an acre and the tree is around 15' from the house.

why does Florida look so dry?
Published (2009-11-28 13:14:00)
Hello and welcome! I lived in Seattle for two years and now live in the Tampa Bay area. I'm happy to give you any info on this area in comparison to gardening in Seattle. Gardening is much more rewarding here due to the wide variety of plants and the year long growth season compared to 3 months. However, you will have to give up certain plants due to the temps here, ie: the beautiful, huge Rhododenrons. The Puget Sound area receives...

Sharbear, The best advice I can give is when they say put the barrel up on blocks, do that. I tried it without that, thinking it seemed like a beg pain to drag blocks from the other side of the house. Well... I couldn't get to the spigot at the bottom and the hose I tried to put on it crimped and I had to tear the whole operation down and start over. Easier to do it right the first time, when ...

You are an inspiration Sylvia as I carefully tend my little tomato plants, several from you. I'm squishing in radishes and carrots in between the tomatoes because I read they grow well together, and the dear boyfriend who digs so many holes for me loves radishes. And the arugula is coming up. My happiest, easiest green. Have you tried it? Happy harvesting Susannah

Hello all! I live in Jacksonville. I haven't been posting much, but read this forum all the time. I do have 3 kiwi vines: 2 females and 1 male, unconfirmed thou... expect confirmation in the coming spring, when they will bloom for the first time. My vines are in the full sun and reached a little over 7 feet in 2 years, which is pretty poor, but at least they survived. It is been a learning ...

I saw the same post and gave it a try. Out of 4, I have one from my spring garden that is just now blooming. Since then I have 4 plants that I started from seed in July, that have a lot of 7-8 oz fruit. Bear in mind that this is just my second year trying to grow tomatoes in FL, so I'm no expert by any stretch, but it didn't work for me. john

In Miami, in the summer, the sun is almost directly overhead, only about 2 degrees south. There is little chance that your yard would be shaded by anything that is not growing there. However, in the winter, the sun has dropped about 47 degrees to the south, so a tree or a building to the south will shade your yard. It happens to all of us. Things will start getting better after Dec. 21. john

You go grl! I wish we could eat more home-grown produce but the reality is that most of what we eat is store bought: onions, carrots, celery, squash, peas, green beans. What I am good at is tomatoes and freeze the extras to take us through the summer. The last time I grew pole beans the whitefly epidemic exploded but am successful with collards and lettuce when the weather is cool enough....

Susannah, I think you have tomato black fly. If you do, I think it's an aphid. Some people use soap sprays, etc for them. Does not work for me, I use malathion. Try this link, it has a picture of one. HTH Corrie Here is a link that might be useful: Tomato black fly

Our soil has a very high concentration of sand, which allows for fast drainage. While we get over 60" of rain a year, most of it comes in the summer - our rainy season. During the winter months (as there is no spring or fall to speak of) it's quite dry here and the water-loving grasses tend to show it first. But, in answer to your question - yes, you can grow a lush garden in most parts of ...

I drag a hose up to 300 feet long to water my fruit trees/shrubs/vines. I stupidly planted many fruit trees on the outskirts of the property, and have no sprinkler system. My veggie garden is only about 50' from the house, so watering it by hand is no problem. The patio trees need watering ever few days, and the raised beds out front require 150' of hose. You would think I would be muscle...

Marcia - If you're going to put the Ficus tree in the ground, put it at least 30 feet from the house. The one in the picture below went in the ground almost 12 years ago from a six inch pot that we bought at WalMart for 49 cents. I grew Rubber Trees in NJ on our sun porch for years and never had one get much larger than 8' tall. This one is now over 25 feet tall and has roots over 100 feet away...

mid-january is too early, but that's when i'm starting mine this year... same zone, deland. they transplant well, so i'll sprout them, transplant to gallons, then again to their final resting place... we're usually pretty frost free by the end of february. six weeks seems a reasonable span to worry about them. i've already started my pepper seedlings... plan to nurse them thru the winter and...
