For the love of Shrubs
Published (2009-11-27 21:53:00)
Oh, that is lovely thyme2dig! I like how the edges get a dark purple/back color. I think I remember you said on another thread that you were putting a lot of new shrubs in recently...it must look very nice. In my yard, the Flame Maples (Acer ginnala 'Flame') are the show stoppers when it comes to fall foliage color. There are eight around the yard. Several are orange/red, while a few others have different colors like yellow and...

Garden for next year
Published (2009-11-22 19:29:00)
This where I have started to prepare the new shade garden. The big bushy hollies will be moved to the back-I used to keep them pruned in an open, zenlike shape, but they have gotten away from me. There will be a path that meanders along and curves to the left toward the back yard. We may have to move a few of the old azaleas in the present island bed on the right in order to avoid the kousa when we make the path. From Drop Box

Color in the garden.
Published (2009-11-27 19:12:00)
I think it was Trailrunner that had the sage-coloured fence - it sort of disappeared. I painted some nice old adirondack chairs in lime green and bubble-gum pink - not going to fade into anything, but I like the impact. I have also seen some obelisks' in potagers painted electric blue - very nice. I guess it is the impact you wish to make!!! Nancy.

Gardens and ads?
Published (2009-11-27 20:28:00)
I get tired of the ones that 'expand' and you have to close them or wait until they return to normal size. BUT - if this is what it takes to keep GW free, so be it. I'd rather wait a couple of seconds more than have to pay a yearly fee. Just MHO. You would think however, that they would have more ads that had to do with gardening. Most of the things advertised, I have no interest in whatsoever.

Weekend Trivia -- Sunday

No surprise, the answers are and Tom and Jerry were more movie and TV cartoons than comic books, but they did appear in both. for Cynthia, Annette, Nancy, Libby, and Stagerat. As for tappets, they are little dealies that ride on the camshaft of an engine as part of the mechanism that opens the valves. I've never heard them called lifter arms, but they are sometimes called lifters, so lifter arms is pretty darn close, Stagerat! In the days...

formality in the cottage garden
Published (2009-11-23 01:20:00)
Holleygarden- You know, I just looked and I don't see much for formal gardens either. There seem to be gardens for specific types of flowers, like roses, that may or may not be formal designs. The only formal style I've seen is in the potager forum and that's not always formal, either. I've read that cottage garden style is more informal and a reaction to the formal gardens that were popular at the time. The curved paths...

pam, after I read your post I sought out that Fire Fox add-on: Ad Block Plus. It works! How strange to not see anything on the right side of the page, it'll take some time getting used to. ha.

Garden for next year
Published (2009-11-21 20:24:00)
1. Build a small raised bed for veggies, esp. tomatoes. 2. Figure out how to meld a raspberry patch into the landscape. I've wanted to grow them for a while, but don't want something that looks like a big weedpatch. 3. Re-edge the rose garden in the back yard. We had so much rain this summer that the weeds are creeping over the stone borders and into the garden. Lois in PA

I would love to have chickens here. They eat lots of bugs. My heirlooms are all tomatoes passed down to me from other Garden Web traders. This was my first season growing them and I saved seeds from the best of each. My favorite was Green Zebra. Nothing else this year came close to the taste I prefer. I like a tart, acidic tomato. Sweet belongs in the fruit bowl, not on my sandwich.

I love the Oakleaf Hydrangea too ...(and thanks for the great pics) .... have but one, and over the years its' dappled shade location has become more deep shade, thus every year is a little different, but this fall it is again living up to expectation. Shrubs/trees are different here in the South - my crepe myrtles are now a story and a half tall and after a summer of providing welcome shade...

In my experience the best colors to use to have something fade into the background are shades of black or olive green. Olive green works particularly well with a lot of evergreens around. If you look at a scene with a lot of evergreens in it, unless they are ones selected for blue or yellow coloring, what you primarily see are shades of dark olive green. Next spring I want to paint our shed a ...

CMK- I'm still designing my garden, but I have a tendency to want to mirror reverse some of my beds....potager influence? :) My little "fairy garden" has a path through the middle and the flowers seem to be mirroring each other. To keep things from looking too formal, I have used very informal flowers. I have roses, but they look more like wild roses or small fairy roses. The other ...

Regina! This is all so wonderful! I have to say that I often like to see garden pics around this time of year the best. With everything so bleak outside it is nice to get a look at green and growing plants again! My favorite pic is #3. Perfect composition! The colors are great too- in July my garden looks so garish. Your Filipendula is a stunner. OH! WHAT is the name of that fab lily? And the...

Well, I think we've all done that one! Some helpful planning hints. Take your pot of plant.Set it where you want it. Now pace the area where it will eventually be... Uh, boy. Then you can decide if it will fit, or if it goes back... Also some planning hints, the tags have the average size for a zone 5/6 growth size. We all know EVERYTHING gets bigger in Texas (and in Georgia) if it likes ...

The best way to keep roses healthy is to do some research and buy the ones that have a good reputation for being healthy. Roses have a wide range of disease resistance, as you've already found by comparing Knockout to Peace. My husband is allergic to chemical sprays, so I don't have the option to spray even if I wanted to. I planted only the most disease resistant roses such as Knockout and ...
