What can I plant with peonies?
Published (2009-11-13 11:35:00)
Your peonies sound very pretty! I've never heard of planting a perennial in the peony, but I'm no expert :) You might want to post this question on the perennial forum, too. It seems like there are more people over there lately, and many seem to be from this forum.

Glenda, I've been growing and keeping seed from CTT since 94 this has been DH's favorite bean, also an Italian pole (another favorite) bean that arrived here on the island in the early 1900's, been growing this one for 44 years. Another bean that came from China again early 1900's I've also been growing since 94. Although these beans are supposed to not readily cross I do keep some distance between them. On the other...

It's always the treasured ones that go! Sorry about the damage. I think it will recover since the bark wasn't girdled. Last winter the rabbits chewed on my newly planted fruit trees but I didn't loose any.

It's 57 and windy. We've had 4 days of rain that came to just under 7" total. It's been so dreary. But inside, my little rack of summer is doing just fine. It's how I manage.

Garden for next year

I am getting rid of the grass between the house and the island bed out front, so we'll only have grass between the sidewalk and island. We have a meandering stone walk that leads from the driveway to the front of the house and I will put in a path between the island and house leading from the walk to connect it with the side of the house and the back yard. I have already removed all the forsythia on our side of the property line and...

First, the refrain. Wouldn't you consider the whole refrain to be Old MacDonald had a farm E-I-E-I-O ? So you were right if you were looking for E-I-E-I-O. I was going to say half the refrain, but that didn't seem exactly right to me. So who is it? Canadians, you shoulda got it. . . Celine Dion. This may have been frustrating for you all, but I have to confess that I have enjoyed the heck out of it. I guess I have an evil streak....

Thank you MeMo! We moved here in late 2004 -- the roadside bed is the oldest one...after that, we built the one by the house in the back. the outlying ones are about two years old.

How much space do you have for the area? 6 full-size peonies can take up quite a bit of room. I have salvia planted with my peonies and they bloom together. Behind my peonies I have asters and in front chrysanthemum that I keep cut back pretty hard, so I have some interest during the fall. The asters and mums look nice when the peony foliage gets its nice, bronze color. I had also planted tons of oriental and asiatic lilies around the peonies...

What can I plant with peonies?

I would not plant anything in the peony. I would also not plant annuals too closely, especially while the peonies are forming their roots. Let's just say I had an unfortunate incident doing this. I would plant something to co-ordinate for the long term. The morning glory might be neat, but it might also rob the peonies of sun, etc. in their formative time. What about Explorer or Morden roses; maybe some campion, which is gangly on its...

More Juneau garden photos later...

I was on a cruise ship so we were mainly downtown, although went along some side roads in the town area to stop and snoop at gardens. A boy on a bicycle told us there were nicer ones up ahead, but mom was afraid to walk that far and not get back in time. They didn't give us near enough time to snoop in Juneau!!

Yesterday was nice here, but a little bitter. I used it to get some garden work done. I planted 2 roses and a few peony tubers. Also, got a few other little plants and bulbs put in. I still have a lot to do, but time is running out! I don't want winter to come, sigh.

I love peonies. To me they're like lilacs and roses, classic flowers. They take up a little space, but if you put a support ring around them, they'll stay upright and beautiful. What color are your peonies? Mine are white with red edges and I like to put them with roses, lavender and dutch iris. Also they do well with annuals like cosmos and zinnias. I'm sure other perennials would look ...

You do a LOT of work if you have to lift all those dahlias every year! WOW. One thing we noticed when we were in Alaska two years ago was how many folks had greenhouses. It was great. And the gardens - everyone had some garden of some kind. Really lovely. Yours is just stunning! We didn't see anything quite like yours when we were in Juneau!

daisies and coneflowers would do well in a very sunny border. Coral bells will work better in the shade. I need to know what is the look that your are seeking? In a straight border like that I would lump similar colours together. Get sphire plants like delphiniums and set them to the back. Get the peonies in the middle row of the border. I also like to contrast different shapes such as ...

Are you talking about calling TO Europe from HOME now? Or, calling HOME when you are IN Europe? Either way. Skype if you have a PC while traveling. Skype is free if both parties are using it through a PC or MAC and ...

Tell them "Please don't trample the roses!" Why is it that most workmen ignore plantings and anything else that is in their way? Or not really in their way? Sometimes there's no need to step right on a bush or flower that is obvious, or throw down lumber.

It is indeed a wonderful long fall this year, isn't it! We had a few days of cold, then the flooding - just enough rain and cool weather to get us into good fall color here for the first time since I've lived here. The trees are spectacular!
